Whether you’re a longtime resident, a Philly newbie, or a hockey fan in general, we all know about the infamous Flyers mascot named Gritty. But really, what is the deal with this goofy character?

According toGritty’s official biography, the googly-eyed, bright orange, muppet-mouthed creature lived underneath the Wells Fargo Center before construction workers discovered his secret.

Gritty was fathered by a “bully,” and thus inherited some aggressive tendencies, making him a bit unlikeable, but extremely meme-worthy.

Due to Gritty’s bizarre appearance and oddball behavior, he not only becomes an easy target for viral memes, but he himself IS a meme.

Drama alert: When he was first introduced to Philly in September 2018, Gritty’s Twitter account announced his debut with a photo. The Pittsburgh Penguins account quote tweeted with “lol ok.”

Our sassy monster clapped back with “sleep with one eye open tonight, bird,” followed by a GIF of him slowly turning from left to center to show off that crazy look in his eyes.

Gritty is a weirdo, yes. But he has heart, he has passion, he has spunk, and he doesn’t tolerate anyone’s nonsense. Kinda sounds a lot like our city, huh? 🧡
