May 9, 2023

Hi, neighbor. Hey Philly reader Sarah L. answered the last trivia question correctly. The nation’s first daily newspaper was called the Pennsylvania Packet. Philly is the home to the oldest botanical garden in North America: what’s it called? Answer right and you can submit the next challenge!

What's CITY Talking About?

🚨 Citywide Hunt for Prison Escapees

A manhunt is underway to find two men who escaped from the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center on Sunday, May 7. The inmates are 18-year-old Ameen Hurst, who has been charged with four homicides, and 24-year-old Nasir Grant, who was held for gun and drug offenses. It took almost a day and three headcounts before the escape was reported. On Monday, Mayor Jim Kenney addressed reporters outside the prison, expressing his anger and saying that the system is ‘screwed up.’ [KYW News]

🤝 Coca-Cola Strike Ends

The Teamster Local 830 union group and Liberty Coca-Cola have ended a four-week long strike in North Philly. The new five-year contract includes significant wage increases for the 414 union workers, retirement plans for workers and their families, and an improved healthcare plan. [6ABC]

🏠 New Affordable Housing for Seniors

Developers recently broke ground on a five-story affordable housing project for seniors in Chinatown, on a lot next to the Vine Street Expressway. Its 51 units will be a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments that are priced at or below 60% of the area’s median income. The project should be completed by summer 2024. ♿ Philly Will Make Sidewalks More Accessible

As part of a federal class action settlement, Philly must install or repair at least 10,000 curb cuts on sidewalks within the next 15 years. In 2019, a group of disabled Philadephians sued the City for discriminating against residents and visitors with disabilities due to a lack of curb ramps. As part of the agreement, the City will post progress on the installation or repair projects on its website. [PhillyVoice]

🗳️Mayor Kenney Cast His Vote

On Monday, Mayor Jim Kenney announced that he voted by mail for former City Councilmember Cherelle Parker in the fierce race to elect his successor. He made it clear, however, that he is not officially endorsing her. Where do the mayoral candidates stand right now as we inch closer to the primary election? Lauren Cristella, of the Committee of Seventy, breaks down the latest independent poll results. [City Cast Philly 🎧]

3 Questions with David Wesolowski

David Wesolowski, aka Dave Wez, is a local foodie and creator of Feeding Time TV, a food blog and Instagram account. He spoke with City Cast Philly about what makes Philly hoagies so iconic. His answers have been condensed for space and clarity.

What makes a quintessential hoagie to you?

In my opinion, it has to be on a seeded roll, not cut in half. Once you cut the top from the bottom, I would say it's no longer a hoagie. Meats and cheeses. Lettuce, tomato, onion. Oregano also adds that extra taste. I do mayo and oil, and vinegar if I want that tang to it.

Where are the best hoagies found in the city?

South Philly is the staple. Antonio's Deli is down there. Angelo’s is down there. In Northern Liberties, Liberty Kitchen makes a great mortadella hoagie.

What are your top 5 favorite spots in Philly?

Farina Di Vita at 250 Catherine Street.

P + S Ravioli at 1722 Oregon Avenue.

Lil Nick’s at 1311 W Moyamensing Ave.

Ricci’s on 1165 S 11th Street.

Angelo’s on 736 S 9th Street.
