What's CITY Talking About?

🚌 Migrant Bus Arrivals Resume

For the first time in four months, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent a bus carrying migrants who crossed the U.S. southern border to Philadelphia. On Wednesday, 31 passengers arrived at 30th Street Station and were met by immigration advocates and city employees. Some passengers went directly to the airport to catch flights to Chicago, while the rest went to a city-run welcome center to schedule pickups or further travel. Title 42, which allowed the government to quickly turn away certain migrants, expires this week, and local officials are preparing for the possibility of many more buses. [Inquirer 🔒]

⚕️ Penn Medicine Unionizes

About 1,400 resident physicians and fellows at Penn Medicine have voted overwhelmingly to unionize, demanding higher pay and improved healthcare and working conditions. Once the National Labor Relations Board certifies the election results, the union will become the first of its kind in Pennsylvania. Residents and fellows will then begin negotiating their first contract with the University of Pennsylvania Health System. [PhillyVoice]

💰 Rally for Higher Minimum Wage

Earlier this week, community activists and City Councilmember Kendra Brooks rallied outside City Hall in support of raising the minimum wage in Philadelphia – and across the state. The current minimum wage in Pennsylvania is $7.25/hour. It has not changed since 2009. Local activists are calling for it to be raised to $15/hour. Brooks noted at the rally that neighboring states like Delaware and New Jersey pay their lowest-wage workers more. [WHYY]
