What's CITY Talking About?

🗳️ New Mayoral Poll Results

PHL17 and Emerson College have put out a new poll surveying 600 Philadelphia Democratic voters. Several candidates fall within the margin of error, but the numbers show Helen Gym with a slight lead. She won support from 21% of Democratic primary voters, followed by Cherelle Parker and Rebecca Rhynhart, who are tied with 18%. Allan Domb got 14%. Rhynhart had the highest favorability rating, and Jeff Brown had the highest unfavorable rating. One in six survey respondents said they were still undecided. [Inquirer 🔒]

⚕️ Councilmembers Move to Ban Safe Consumption Sites

Five City Councilmembers are backing a bill that would ban supervised injection sites from opening in their districts, covering the Riverwards, South Philadelphia, and most of Northeast Philly. Supervised injection sites, which take a harm reduction approach to the drug crisis, allow people to use drugs under medical supervision to prevent overdoses. The legislation was introduced by Councilmember Quetcy Lozada, whose district covers Kensington, the epicenter of the city’s opioid epidemic. [Inquirer 🔒]

🤝 New Youth Anti-Violence Program

Philly Truce, an anti-violence nonprofit organization, is running a new program called Safe City Boys, to keep young men of color on a safe and healthy life path. About 24 boys between 11-and 15-years-old are currently participating in behavioral therapy, as well as learning conflict resolution and language arts. In June, program graduates will serve their communities as peer mediators throughout the summer. [KYW News]

🏠 Move Bombing Anniversary

On May 13, 1985, Philadelphia police dropped a military-grade bomb on a house in West Philly, killing 11 members of the Black liberation group MOVE, and destroying two city blocks. For the first time in 38 years, a surviving family member of the MOVE founders, Mike Africa, Jr., owns a house on that same 6200 block of Osage Avenue. Africa intends for the house to be a space for people to reflect on what happened, and peacefully move forward. [6ABC]

Philly Chatter

The annual Philly Naked Bike Ride returns on Aug. 26. Some Philadelphians go all-out for this wacky tradition, while others stand firmly against it. Last week, I posted a Reddit discussion thread in which many residents said that public nudity isn’t that big of a deal.

But Hey Philly readers, on the other hand, are not huge fans!

Hey Philly reader Janice S. told me she thinks the annual event is “definitely not appropriate.”

Many of you took issue with the legality of public nudity.

“Any other day of the week, these same people would be arrested,” Hey Philly reader Kimberly B. said.

Leah Y. expressed similar sentiments, saying “They lock people up for indecent exposure, why is this any different?”
