What's CITY Talking About?
🚴 Old City’s Ambitious Bike Lane Plan
Philly will install its first curb-protected bike lanes on East Market Street, between 6th and 2nd Streets. It’s part of a long-term plan by Old City District to improve public space in the neighborhood. The project is more complicated than most bike lane installations, so it could be a year or more before construction begins. [Billy Penn]
📉 Philly’s Population Failed to Rebound Post-Pandemic
Out of the 20 most populous American cities, Philadelphia was the only one that didn’t reverse or slow pandemic-era population declines last year, according to new U.S Census data. Between July 2020 and July 2021, Philly lost 11,000 residents, and the population dropped again in July 2022, with 22,000 more residents leaving. The data doesn’t show why people left. [Inquirer 🔒]

🤝 Philly Welcomes Another Group of Migrants
Texas recently bused about 80 more asylum seekers to Philly, the second arrival in a month. Philadelphia's Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA), along with other city departments and local non-profits, provided new arrivals with basic necessities, health screenings, legal help and other services. Earlier this year, Philadelphia officially became a “Welcoming City.” Amy Eusebio, director of OIA, shares what this means for our immigrant communities [City Cast Philly 🎧]

Philly Chatter
The Eagle's TikTok account recently asked graphic designer Emily Ollendick, who is well known for redesigning sports team logos, to give the Birds’ icon an upgrade. The artist responded and posted her redesign on the social media platform, but Eagles fans were not having it.
Ollendick’s logo had one major flaw that fans were quick to point out. The bird is facing to the right, and that’s just plain wrong! The Eagles are the only team in the NFL with a logo facing the left; this allows for a hidden “E” to be visible within the bird’s feathers.
Much of her work receives high praise from fans, but Philly's take was not flattering. Twitter users called the design “cartoonish,” horrible,” “trash,” and one user compared it to a Pokemon character. One of the top comments on the TikTok video read “absolutely not.”
The “Bird Gang” is a tough crowd! What do you think of Olldendick’s design?
