🗣️ Cherelle Parker’s 1st Public Remarks Since Primary Win
Cherelle Parker made her first public appearance yesterday after winning the Democratic nomination for the City’s highest office. Parker told reporters she is “nearly 100%” recovered from the dental issues that kept her from attending her primary election celebration last week. Parker also met with Governor Josh Shapiro. They spoke about revamping the Philadelphia Police Department and her proposal for year-round schooling. [Inquirer 🔒]
🏭 Upgrade to Philly’s Pollution Regulation
For the first time in more than 40 years, Philadelphia has changed how it regulates toxic air pollution from industrial facilities. The Air Pollution Control board recently approved an update to an air pollutants regulation adopted in 1981. Now, the City can regulate 200 pollutants, twice as many as before. And, officials can reject a permit application if a facility’s emissions would create an elevated risk of cancer to nearby residents. [WHYY]
🗳️ Cindy Bass Narrowly Wins 8th District Seat
Three-term incumbent Cindy Bass has narrowly defeated opponent Seth Anderson-Oberman in the heated Democratic primary for City Council’s 8th District, which represents Chestnut Hill, Mount Airy, and Germantown. As of yesterday morning, officials had counted more than 26,000 ballots and called the race by around just 400 votes. [Inquirer 🔒]
🧠 Expanding Mental Health Care in West Philly
Penn Medicine is opening a new mental health care hub in what used to be Mercy Philadelphia Hospital on Cedar Avenue. There will also be a crisis response center for emergency evaluations and treatment for substance use, mood disorders, anxiety, and schizophrenia. The new hub opens in July, and the crisis response center will open later this summer. [PhillyVoice]
🌿 Will PA Legalize Cannabis This Year?
State Senators Sharif Street and Dan Laughlin just announced they will introduce legislation to legalize adult recreational use of cannabis in Pennsylvania. It’s hard to say whether it will pass this year, but state cannabis laws could undergo other changes.
