🏊 Philly’s Latest Effort to Hire More Lifeguards
Temple University students who work as lifeguards at city pools this summer can earn three college credits. This new partnership between Temple and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation is the latest in a series of efforts to try to fully staff municipal pools this summer. Last year, Philly struggled to find enough lifeguards and several pools stayed shut for the season. Things are looking a little better this year. The City needs to hire 400 lifeguards to open all of its 70+ pools, and has already received nearly 300 applications from certified lifeguards. [PhillyVoice]
⚕️ Hepatitis Rates High in Philly
New data shows that hepatitis infections are prevalent in almost every Philadelphia ZIP code. One in 20 Philly residents have reported testing positive for hepatitis B and hepatitis C, according to the city Department of Public Health’s annual report. These viruses are transmitted through direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids, and symptoms include inflammation, fatigue, nausea, and fever. Health department officials said the data doesn’t account for unreported cases, so the actual rate of infections could be even higher. [WHYY]
🔎 Council Looking into Philly Jail Break
City Councilmember Sharon Vaughn introduced a resolution to investigate how two dangerous inmates escaped from the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center on May 7. If passed, Council could hold a hearing on the matter this summer. The escapees, Ameen Hurst and Nasir Grant, managed to go unnoticed by prison officials for 19 hours. Authorities recaptured Grant after four days, but Hurst was on the run for over a week. [KYW News]
🎨 Why is Philly Losing its Murals?
Mural Arts Philadelphia has unveiled a new mural outside The Fire in Northern Liberties. Entitled “Legendary Performances,” the piece is a tribute to the Grammy-winning artist John Legend, who started his career playing an open mic at the music venue. But, how long will this mural last? Many Philly murals have been torn down or painted over without warning. Hear from mural artist Shira Walinsky and Streets Dept contributor Eric Dale on how Philly could reframe mural ownership.
