💰 City Council Wants $$$ for Quality-of-Life Issues

Nearly every City Councilmember recently backed a proposal that would invest $72 million to address quality-of-life issues in Philly. The budget, authored by Councilmember Jamie Gauthier, includes more than $10 million to clean and secure vacant lots, as well as $37 million to improve traffic safety, particularly near schools and daycares. 🕺🏽 Breakdancing Competition Coming to Philly

Elite breakdancing is heading to the City of Brotherly Love this summer. Breakdancing will be debuting as an Olympic sport in 2024, but before then, hundreds of dancers from all over the nation will battle it out on August 26 in Philadelphia. The winner will represent the U.S. in the World Finals. [NBC10]

⚕️ PA Classifies Xylazine as Controlled Substance

Pennsylvania has temporarily classified the animal tranquilizer xylazine, aka ‘tranq,’ as a controlled substance. In 2021, xylazine contributed to 575 overdose deaths, six time as many deaths related to the drug as there had been in 2017, according to the state health department. Department officials say this action preserves the legitimate use of the drug by veterinarians and farmers. [CBS News]

⚖️ Columbus Statue Lawsuit

The Friends of Marconi Plaza, the group that fought to preserve the Christopher Columbus statue in South Philly, is suing Mayor Kenney and members of the city’s Historical Commission for their part in attempts to take it down. In the complaint filed last week, the group alleged that city officials conspired to abuse the legal process by trying to remove the statue after it became a site of tense standoffs during racial justice demonstrations in 2020.
