What's CITY Talking About?

🚗 Section of I-95 Collapses

After a commercial truck carrying a petroleum-based product caught fire, an elevated section of Interstate 95 collapsed. The fire broke out early in the morning on Sunday, June 11 near the Cottman Avenue exit. Officials say repairs could take several months. SEPTA announced it will add extra capacity on several of its regional rail lines. You can find detours online. [6ABC]

💰 Philly Distributes Opioid Settlement Funds

Philly chose 27 community organizations to enhance addiction prevention and treatment services. Each organization will receive grant money to expand or launch new programs on harm reduction, trauma care, legal aid, housing, and more. The awards are part of the city’s share of settlement money won in national lawsuits against big opioid manufacturers and distributors. The organizations receiving funds include Operation in My Backyard and Ark of Safety. [WHYY]

🚦 Bill to Fine Illegal Street Racers

City Councilmember Mike Driscoll introduced a bill that would impose $2,000 fines on drivers caught drifting, drag racing, or performing other illegal street activity on highways and city streets. It comes after Anthony Allegrini Jr. was shot by state police after authorities tried to break up a car meet on I-95 on Sunday, June 5. [PhillyVoice]

🚏SEPTA Documenting Bus-Lane Violations with AI

From April to June, seven SEPTA buses with AI cameras documented 2,300 bus-lane violations and 19,000 instances of cars blocking bus-stop zones. The transit agency partnered with an AI start-up that has installed its cameras on buses in several large transit systems. The pilot program will be finished at the end of the month, then SEPTA will assess the data and decide whether to establish an enforcement program. [Inquirer🔒]

Philly Chatter: Philly Teacher Migration

Philly teachers are leaving their jobs at the highest rate in Pennsylvania, according to a recent research from Penn State University.

Community members, including some current and former teachers, took to Reddit to share their thoughts on why this is happening. Check out some highlights from that conversation:

OldAgedZenElf: “As a teacher in Philly, everyone else has more power than you: the parents, the administration, the students, and you pretty much have to just sit there and take it. The buildings are falling apart, my money goes to buy supplies, since I’d rather buy some pencils than have kids do nothing or if I want to run a science experiment I can either wait and maybe get what I need or go out and buy it myself.”

JBizznass: “Other local districts that pay more with better working conditions need teachers too. Why would teachers stay in Philly?”

Generally_here: “My sister in law is a teacher and the stories she tells us are horrific.”

A Commonwealth Court judge ruled this year that the way the state funds schools is unfair. What happens now? [City Cast Philly 🎧]
