🚫 City Council Proposal to Ban Ski Masks
To enhance public safety, City Councilmember Anthony Phillips introduced legislation that would prohibit residents from wearing ski masks in public spaces. Under the proposal, the city can issue a fine of $230 to those caught wearing ski masks in rec centers, daycares, parks, schools and city-owned buildings. A majority of the City Council co-sponsored the bill, and it’s expected to receive a hearing in the fall. [WHYY]
🏆 Philly Elementary School Could Win Global Prize
Chester A. Arthur Elementary could win a global education prize for its work in using a restorative approach to conflict resolution. The K-8 school in Center City has virtually eradicated out-of-school suspensions by teaching children to resolve conflicts by themselves. The winners will be named in the fall, and five winning schools will split $250,000. [Inquirer 🔒]
📉 Philly Homicide Numbers Decreased
Homicide numbers in Philly are going down, according to statistics from the City Controller’s Office. As of June 14, there have been 190 homicides in 2023, a 17% decrease from last year. In a recent report, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said the department implemented a strategy called Operation Pinpoint, which places police more frequently in districts that make up more than 43% of gun violence in Philly.
