What's CITY Talking About?
⚖️ Philly and School District Settle Safety Lawsuit
The School District of Philadelphia and City of Philadelphia settled a lawsuit related to the oversight of district buildings, in particular who gets to decide if they're safe enough to open. The district will retain that power, but agreed to inspect all school buildings for environmental hazards twice a year, posting the results online. The Philadelphia Department of Health will distribute $2.5 million to the district to improve data management regarding these reports. [Inquirer 🔒]
🕊 Dancer from Philly Killed in NYC
O’Shae Sibley, a 28-year-old dancer from North Philly, was killed in New York City on Saturday, July 29. While Sibley and his friends were dancing at a Brooklyn gas station, a group of men approached them, hurling gay slurs. One of the men fatally stabbed Sibley. Police are investigating the murder as a potential hate crime. Before moving to NYC to audition for Broadway shows, Sibley studied modern dance and ballet at the Philadelphia Dance Company, aka PHILADANCO!. [PhillyVoice]
🏠 Bartram Village Renovation
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will give $50 million to rebuild Bartram Village, an 80-year-old public housing complex in Kingsessing. All current structures will be demolished, and developers will construct 500 new units in phases. “Blossom at Bartram,” as the new plan is known, is the result of two years of community engagement. Construction begins in April, and some new units will be available by the end of 2025. [Metro Philadelphia]
