What's CITY Talking About?
💰 Mayor Kenney’s PAC Spending Raises Eyebrows
In June 2020, Mayor Jim Kenney launched Kenney PAC to raise money for progressive candidates across Pennsylvania. Over the past three years, the political action committee spent more than $780,000, but only $60,000 actually went to other campaigns. Much of the money paid for events, hotel rooms, restaurant bills, airfare, and consultants for previous Kenney campaigns. Mayor spokesperson Marty O’Rourke told the Inquirer that the restaurant bills were for meetings relevant to Kenney’s political goals. [Inquirer🔒]
🚎 Another SEPTA Vehicle Crash
SEPTA has seen better days. Early on Sunday, a car that reportedly ran a red light collided with a trolley in Kingsessing, marking the seventh SEPTA vehicle-related crash this summer. The collision left four people injured. The driver, Brianna Satchell-Thomas, an off-duty SEPTA employee, has been charged with a DUI, reckless driving, and other offenses. The transit authority is continuing to investigate a series of recent crashes and to assess its safety procedures. [PhillyVoice]
📍 Preserving Black Bottom History
The Heritage West community archaeology project recently began excavating West Philly’s Black Bottom neighborhood, which was demolished in the late 1960s to make way for University City. Archeologists expect to sift through a lot of trash, to find out more about the lifestyles of former residents. The team is working closely with community members and those who grew up in the area.
