What's CITY Talking About?
✨ Philly's Changing All The Streetlight Bulbs
Construction began this week on a project to swap about 130,000 streetlights with remote-controlled LED lights over the next two years. The Philadelphia Energy Authority issued a more than $90 million bond to finance the project, which prioritizes bright lighting in high-crime neighborhoods and reducing the use of electricity. Officials say it will lower the municipal government’s carbon emissions by 10%. The lights will also have self-monitoring technology, so the city will no longer have to rely on residents to report outages. [WHYY]
📱 Temple Launches New Safety App
Called TUSafe, the app will allow students to contact police with a one-touch panic button, report crimes, and request escorts to walk them home. The university has been criticized over the last few years for an uptick in violent crime. So far this year, there were 283 car thefts and 37 armed robberies within a quarter mile of Temple’s main campus, according to the 6ABC data team. [PhillyVoice]
🏀 Latest on the 76ers Arena Debate
