What's CITY Talking About?
🚧 I-95 Park Breaking Ground
This new 11.5-acre public space will reconnect Center City to the Delaware River Waterfront via a spacious plaza covering I-95. Plans call for lots of green space, an entertainment stage, a play area, cafés, and more. The massive project is expected to be completed in 2025. [Billy Penn]
💻 Hospital Data Hacked
Earlier this month, a cyberattack on the computer networks of Prospect Medical Holdings disrupted operations at hospitals in Pennsylvania and four other states. Hackers are attempting to sell the data, which includes Social Security numbers, driver's licenses, medical records, and legal documents, for 50 Bitcoins, or about $1.3 million. [PhillyVoice]
🧬 Drexel Gene Therapy Minor
Drexel University’s School of Biomedical Engineering just received a nearly $1 million grant to create a cell and gene therapy concentration. Drexel undergrad and grad students can start taking the curriculum as a pilot this summer before the university officially launches it as a 30-credit minor. The grant will also support local science programs for high school students and professional development for teachers. [WHYY]
🏫 Philly’s Teacher Shortage
Pennsylvania districts have been struggling to hire enough teachers for the upcoming school year. This shortage is particularly acute in Philly, which has the highest teacher attrition rate statewide, according to a Penn State study. City Cast Philly host Trenae Nuri and City Cast Pittsburgh host Megan Harris recently unpacked the forces driving this complicated issue. [City Cast Philly 🎧]
