What's CITY Talking About?
⚕️ COVID-19 Uptick in Philly
As of Thursday, Aug. 31, 60 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 in the Philly region, exceeding 50 for the first time since the spring, according to public health officials. Residents are encouraged to stay home and get tested for the virus when feeling ill, and to consider masking in crowded indoor spaces. Immunocompromised residents are advised to talk with their doctor about antiviral medications. “By taking reasonable precautions, we can help prevent the infection from affecting people at highest risk,” Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Bettigole wrote in a statement. 🚏 Final Draft of New Bus Routes
After six years of planning and multiple rounds of community engagement, SEPTA has a final draft for its Bus Revolution plan. The plan aims to modernize the system, making commutes faster and more reliable for residents. Over the last two weeks of the month, the transit authority will host 10 public hearings and collect more feedback, marking the final step before SEPTA’s board can approve or deny the project. 💰 Peco Bills Decreasing
Starting today, about 1.2 million Peco customers will see lower electric bills. Default customers will see a 3% drop in their monthly electric bill, bringing the rate back to spring levels. This translates to an average decrease of about $4.48 per month. [Inquirer 🔒]
🛤️ Philly’s Stagnant High Line Project
Atlanta, Chicago, and New York have all successfully transformed unused railroad lines into gorgeous public parks. Philly’s been working toward a similar makeover with the Reading Viaduct for around 20 years. But only a tiny stretch has been completed so far. How Climate Change Threatens Philly’s Water Supply
Parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and New York all drink from the same water supply: the Delaware River. And it’s not always easy to share with others.
