Providing shade in Philly's hottest neighborhoods
September 6, 2023
Good morning, neighbor. Thank you to Hey Philly reader India D. for writing in what she loves about our city: “the determination to be good humans.” What do you love most about Philly?

What's CITY Talking About?
🌡️ Philly’s Heat Spell
Summer may be ending this month, but it’s making a grand exit, with a heat wave expected to last through the week. Temperatures will be in the 90s, but will feel more like “102 or 103” degrees, according to local meteorologists. Seventy-four Philly public schools that lack air conditioning have scheduled early dismissals for the first two days of school. Temperatures should drop back into the 80s this weekend. [Inquirer 🔒]

Mayor Jim Kenney appointed First Deputy John Stanford to serve as acting police commissioner. Outlaw, who took on the job in February 2020, was the first woman and first woman of color to hold the position. [KYW News]
🎄Kelly Green Christmas
The 2022 Eagles Christmas album was such a success that offensive linemen Jason Kelce, Jordan Mailata, and Lane Johnson are releasing another one. Last year, the trio sold 25,000 vinyl copies and raised $1.2 million for local charities. This year, the album has 11 tracks, and features special guests like Patti LaBelle and Amos Lee. You can put in your album pre-sale order shortly after Halloween. [Inquirer 🔒]
🏊🏼♀️ Philly’s Forbidden Swimming Spot
Outside of organized events, swimming in the Schuylkill River is not allowed, but some choose to partake anyway. The Pros and Cons of Philly’s $6,000 Trash cans
Philly has so much litter, it’s often referred to as “Filthadelphia.” One way our city deals with trash is through the BigBelly Program, hundreds of solar-powered trash compactors located in major commercial districts. But some residents and business organizations say the bins overflow, break down, and simply attract more litter. Host Trenae Nuri speaks with Billy Penn reporter Meir Rinde about these complaints and how the city could clean up their act.
Have a great week, friend!
