What's CITY Talking About?

💰 PA Schools Are Underfunded
Pennsylvania school districts need an extra $6.2 billion in funding to adequately educate students, according to a new analysis by Penn State professor Matthew Kelly. Kelly served as an expert witness in the recent trial that led to the landmark ruling which declared that the way Pennsylvania funds school districts is unconstitutional. Kelly presented his findings to lawmakers at a hearing this week. [Inquirer 🔒]

⚖️ Jeff Brown’s Ethics Case Dismissed
It’s a good week for former mayoral candidate Jeff Brown. On Tuesday, a Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge dismissed a major ethics lawsuit that accused Brown of illegally coordinating with a super PAC. Judge Joshua Roberts sided with the PAC, called For a Better Philadelphia, which spent nearly $3 million on the race. The group had argued that Brown’s involvement before officially launching his campaign did not count as an ethics violation. [Inquirer 🔒]

Where Is It?
Last week, I asked you to locate this gorgeous art installation. H/T to Hey Philly readers Laura I. and Meryl H. for getting it right. This piece is part of the Percy Street Project, and is on the 1300 block of Percy Street in East Passyunk.

Meryl submitted a photo of an adorable crochet avocado, a tag from local graffiti artist Nylon, and a tiny ASFM sticker in the lower left corner of one of the windows.

Can you tell me where this is? If you’re correct, you can submit a photo for the next challenge. (You can always send us photos!)

Fixing PA’s Underfunded Public Schools
Back in February, the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania ruled that the way the state funds public education is unconstitutional. But what does that actually mean?
A recent report from the Philadelphia Inquirer found that a whopping 85% of Pennsylvania school districts don't get enough funding to adequately educate students. This week, lawmakers and experts in education are holding hearings to figure out what needs to change. Host Trenae Nuri unpacks all of this with Inquirer reporters Maddie Hanna and Kasturi Pananjady.
Talk to you tomorrow, neighbor 🤗
