🌊 Why spotted lanternflies are down the shore
September 15, 2023
Cheers to Friday, friend! Check out these “Philly affirmations.” My favorite? “I have the same willpower as the Rotisserie Chicken Man.” Which one makes you laugh the most? 👀

What's CITY Talking About?
🗳️ Council Votes Against Safe Injection Sites
Yesterday, Philadelphia City Council voted 13-1 in favor of a bill to restrict safe injection sites from opening in most of the city. Councilmember Quetcy Lozada, who wrote the measure, said it is not a permanent ban, but rather an attempt to ensure community input in any effort to open such a site. [Inquirer 🔒]

🌊 Lanternflies Down the Shore?
Large groups of dead spotted lanternflies are littering Jersey Shore beaches. What’s behind this unusual migration? Entomology expert Julie Urban told The Philadelphia Inquirer that as these insects fly around, they’re likely being pushed off course by intense winds. But these tree-loving, invasive insects don’t thrive down the shore, and they’re dying in clusters along the tide line. [Inquirer 🔒]

🤔 An Unethical Celebration?
Did you see that group photo that 24 officers took with re-captured escapee Danelo Cavalcante? Some policing experts say that the police photo and the overall celebratory mood was dehumanizing. Philly immigration lawyer Pavel Rozman told KYW News that it highlights systemic bias and impacts public trust in law enforcement. [KYW News]
- On the flip side, State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens, who led the manhunt, had no problem with the photo, and commended his team for a job well done.
