What's CITY Talking About?
🌡️ A Cool Philly Summer?
Summer 2023 was the world’s hottest since global records began in the late 19th century, but not for Philly. Despite a blazing July and a humid start to September, we had our coolest summer since 2014. From June 1 to Aug. 31, temperatures were relatively mild, averaging below 76 degrees overall, according to the National Weather Service. [WHYY]
- Right, but Philly still had some wild weather this summer. We spoke with a local climate reporter to learn what’s behind this summer’s major storms. [City Cast Philly 🎧]
🚌 Little Bus, Big Impact
Beep, beep! A special pre-school van will be offering classes to low-income West Philly children, starting Sept. 25. El Busesito, which translates to “little bus” in Spanish, will provide free lessons to 32 children, twice a week. It’s intended to bridge the gap for children who don’t have adequate access to pre-kindergarten. [Inquirer🔒]
🦺 New School Shooter Training
ALICE drills — which stand for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate — involve teaching students and teachers how to take down an armed perpetrator. And, they’re coming to Philly classrooms. For now, the School District of Philadelphia’s protocol is to go into lockdown, but the new procedure will take effect once the Philly Police Department okays it. [Billy Penn]
