What's CITY Talking About?

NJ Gov Calls on Sen. Menendez to Resign

Federal prosecutors charged Sen. Robert Menendez with bribery on Friday. They allege that he and his wife, Nadine Menendez, accepted hundreds of thousands in cash, gold bars, a Mercedes-Benz, and other items of value in exchange for doing favors for and providing sensitive government information to Egyptian officials. On Friday evening, Gov. Phil Murphy called on Menendez to resign. He is the first sitting senator in U.S. history to have been indicted on two unrelated criminal charges, and has stepped down as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. But, Menendez denied the allegations. “For years, forces behind the scenes have repeatedly attempted to silence my voice and dig my political grave,” he said in an email statement Friday. Speed Tables Coming to Lincoln Drive

PennDOT and the city plan to build four calming devices at either end of Lincoln Drive in West Mt. Airy and institute other short-term ways to get vehicles to slow down. Residents have long demanded the city help reduce aggressive driving and speeding on this roadway, which passes through dense residential areas and has hairpin curves. [Inquirer]

Two Weeks to Save a Historic Mosaic

After months of uncertainty, the demolition of the former Painted Bride Art Center in Old City will be moving forward. The team there has just a few weeks to find a way to preserve as much as possible of the building’s iconic 7,000-square-foot mosaic. The mural, known as “The Skin of the Bride,” was created by the artist Isaiah Zagar, and his fans have long fought, but failed, to preserve the piece in its original form. [Philly Voice]

Philly’s Construction Safety Problem

When you buy a renovated home or see major home repairs happening in your neighborhood, you assume that work is done safely. But that’s not always the case in Philly.

An ongoing investigation by The Philadelphia Inquirer has found that unsafe construction work can go unchecked, sometimes damaging neighboring properties and even causing buildings to collapse.

Host Trenae Nuri speaks with Samantha Melamed, the investigative reporter behind the “Crumbling City” series, on why Philly homes are uniquely vulnerable and how to protect yourself from shoddy work.
