💙 Take a journey through Cedar Park

September 28, 2023

Hey there, friend. Cool news: 59th Street is now “Joyce Abbott Way,” in honor of the Philly teacher who inspired the hit sitcom “Abbott Elementary” 🎉

What's CITY Talking About?

⚖️ Mayor Kenney v. City Council

Philadelphia City Council passed a zoning overlay law earlier this month that makes it harder to open a supervised injection site in most of the city. Yesterday, Mayor Jim Kenney announced plans to veto the measure, calling it “troublingly anti-science and misleading.” The bill will return to Council, but it’s likely that Kenney’s veto won’t make a difference. The legislation passed 13-1, and it only takes 12 votes to override a mayoral veto. [WHYY]

🚔 Philly Stores Vandalized

On Tuesday night, dozens of people looted and vandalized stores across Philadelphia, leading to burglary and theft charges for at least 30 people. The unrest unfolded shortly after a nearby march, decrying a recent fatal shooting by a Philadelphia police officer. But acting Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Stanford said the peaceful protesters weren’t to blame, per The Inquirer. Stanford described those involved as “criminal opportunists,” taking advantage of the situation. [Inquirer 🔒]

🧣 Bundled Up, Philly-Style

Åsa Buchta, lead designer of the nationally distributed yarn company Berroco, named a fall collection of knitting patterns after Philly neighborhoods. The collection consists of a hat/mitten combo, a scarf, sweater, and a vest, with names like “Spruce Hill” and “Fairmount.” While Butcha lived in Philly, she said she loved visiting our parks, libraries, and historical sites. Where Is It?

The last challenge was tricky, so I don’t blame y’all for getting stumped. This cute snapshot from Hey Philly reader Meryl H. is on 1336 S. Percy Street 🥑

It’s hard to find a block in Philly that’s not covered with some type of flair. (Hey Philly reader Meryl H.)

Let’s do something different. Here’s our City Cast producer Abby Fritz enjoying some tasty small plates. Can you tell us what restaurant she’s dining in? Hint: it’s in East Passyunk. Let’s go, Philly foodies: impress us.

Can you identify this restaurant? (Abby Fritz/City Cast Philly)

SEPTA's Bus Revolution Is Coming

Could your favorite bus route disappear? It’s possible.

What does a bus revolution look like, anyway? (NurPhoto/Getty Images)

For the first time in six decades, SEPTA is unveiling a bus route overhaul, dubbed the “Bus Revolution.” This plan is six years in the making, and just about ready for a vote by the agency’s board members. How revolutionary is it, though?

We wanted to find out, so host Trenae Nuri spoke with Thomas Fitzgerald, transportation reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer, about what will change for commuters.

Tomorrow is Friday, neighbor! 🥳
