Good morning! How about them Phillies? Let’s make sure they hear our cheers all the way in Arizona in their first away game of the NLCS tonight.

What's CITY Talking About?
New Protections for Gender-Affirming Care
Mayor Jim Kenney signed an executive order to establish Philadelphia as a safe haven for gender-affirming care. It bans city government from cooperating in any investigation that may try to penalize anyone involved in such treatment in Philadelphia, including people who travel to the city to receive it. A number of other cities have put similar protections in place in response to state restrictions on care for transgender youth. [NBC10]
Sixers Concessions Workers Seek Assurances
Labor unions representing sports arena service workers are trying to win concessions (no pun intended) from the ‘76ers as the team tries to win approval for a new Center City arena. While the estimated 9,000 construction jobs the project would bring has helped win endorsement from the building trades unions, the union that represents arena food service workers wants the team to commit to creating well-paying, full-time jobs for the 1,000 permanent workers it would employ. Painted Bride Mosaic Comes Down
Workers have begun to take apart the 7,000 square foot tile mosaic that covers the former home of the Painted Bride Art Center in Old City. Artist Isaiah Zagar, of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens fame, constructed the piece over nine years, and it lasted a quarter century. Workers are trying to salvage the more valuable tiles and ceramic pieces incorporated into the mural. [WHYY]

Another 18-year-old from Camden is also in custody for the killing. A second officer was wounded, but survived, the shooting last Thursday evening. [CBS Philadelphia]

Have You Been to These Unexpected Philly Landmarks?

Visitors to Philly often go see the Rocky statue, the Liberty Bell and, of course, go eat a cheesesteak. But these destinations can feel a little bit cliched when there is so much more to explore in our city. Back in July, host Trenae Nuri talked with Dylan Thuras, co-founder of Atlas Obscura, about what he recommends you check out in Philly.
A correction to yesterday’s newsletter: the opening Philadelphia Film Festival event we linked to was out of date. Sorry about that! We’ve included the correct link in today’s event listings.
Have a good one.
