Where is this cryptic sidewalk message?
October 20, 2023
Happy Friday! It’s really starting to feel like fall, isn’t it? There’s a bunch of events this weekend where you can don flannel, breathe in the crisp air, and savor seasonal treats. Read on, we’ve got a few in today’s newsletter.

What's CITY Talking About?
R.I.P. to “Rocky” Supporting Actor
The actor who played Rocky’s uncouth, cigar-chomping cornerman, Burt Young, has died at 83. Sylvester Stallone posted a tribute on Instagram Wednesday saying, “you were an incredible man and artist, I and the World will miss you very much." Fun fact: during the shoots for “Rocky,” Young would slather his neck in vermouth; the smell reminded him that the Paulie Pennino character was “half a waste.” [CBS/Philly Mag]
City Installs MOVE Bombing Exhibit
Philadelphia unveiled an exhibit commemorating the 1985 bombing of the Black radical group’s West Philly headquarters by police, which led to a fire that killed five children and six other MOVE members, and destroyed 61 homes. Two display cases installed in the Municipal Services Building, across from City Hall, feature photos, text, and video detailing that dark day in our history. [Inquirer]
SEPTA to Begin “Marathon” Negotiations to Avert Strike
Add this to the list of looming deadlines that threaten to disable public infrastructure: SEPTA and the transit workers union have until the end of the month to agree on the terms of a new labor contract. The workers want higher wages they say are necessary to compete for workers, and are ready to strike if no deal is reached. Both sides will meet in a hotel to start a “marathon” round of negotiations next week. [Inquirer]
Mütter Museum Listens to Community Feedback
The Mütter Museum held a town hall this week that elicited heartfelt commentary from supporters and critics of the iconic medical history institution. Its collection of human remains has stirred controversy as museums reconsider the ethics of displaying bodies obtained without consent from marginalized people. Some speakers with rare physical deformities like those on display at the Mütter spoke in support of the museum, saying it provides a rare place where they feel seen. [WHYY]

Where Is It?
Many of you correctly guessed where our furry friend lives! This is Geoffrey Chaucer, resident cat at the Book Corner, a used book store in Logan Square.

Congrats to Jack L., Bennett O., Nicole P., and Randye S., for correctly identifying his book nook.
To solve our next challenge, you’re going to want to look down when you walk around Philly. Hey Philly reader Nicole P. sent us this photo of sidewalk art that has resonated with her over the years.

“It has meant different things to me at different times I've passed by—after my cat died, after my mom was diagnosed with cancer. It can sound like a resignation or it can sound like a comfort. It used to be easier to read, but it's gotten worn down over time, which I guess is ‘just the way’ things are,'” wrote Nicole. Well put ❣️
