What's CITY Talking About?
Man Killed Outside Upper Darby Mosque
A 65-year-old man was shot and killed just before evening prayer began at the Masjid Al Madinah Sunday night in what police said was an apparent carjacking. Investigators said they did not believe the shooting was motivated by anti-Muslim prejudice. Even so, the Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations wants a “thorough investigation” of the incident amid an increase in Islamophobia and antisemitism in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war. FDA Recalls Potentially Contaminated Eye Drops
Rite Aid, CVS and Target are among the stores pulling eye moisturizer products from shelves after the FDA found unsanitary conditions in the manufacturing plant. Contaminated eye drops were connected to a nationwide outbreak of drug-resistant bacteria last spring that led to three deaths and eight people losing their vision. So far, the FDA has received no reports of any eye infections linked to the products in the current recall. [6ABC/FDA]
Amtrak Rolls Out Cheaper Fares
Tickets for a one-way “Value” ticket to New York City start at $19 under Amtrak’s new fare structure taking effect nationwide this week. For just a couple dollars more, the passenger railway is offering a fully-refundable “Flex” fare that previously went for $128. Amtrak advises buying early to get the cheapest tickets to New York, D.C., or any of the network’s destinations. [Inquirer/KYW]
Piers Eyed for Preservation
A Philadelphia real estate developer is seeking a preservation easement for two historic waterfront warehouses it recently acquired on the Delaware River in South Philly. Piers 38 and 40, designed in the ornate Beaux-Arts architectural style, were used for storing and shipping goods and date to an era when Philadelphia’s manufacturing power made it the “Workshop of the World.” The developer has not yet shared any plans for how the buildings will be used. What’s the ‘Brotherly Shove,’ and Should the Eagles Trademark It?

If you’ve watched a Philadelphia Eagles game this season, you may have seen quarterback Jalen Hurts surging through a pile of players to advance the ball a yard or two, or even score a touchdown. That critical game play has been dubbed the “Brotherly Shove” or “Tush Push.” And now, the Eagles want to trademark it. Host Trenae Nuri talks with John George, senior reporter at the Philadelphia Business Journal, about why local sports teams and players are monetizing their catchphrases.
Stay safe out there tonight, Philly. Try not to eat all that candy in one sitting.
