What's CITY Talking About?
Complaint Alleges Discrimination in Bucks Schools
The NAACP has joined with several Bucks County families in filing a federal civil rights complaint that accuses the Pennridge School District of discriminating against students based on race and LGBTQ identity. They say the district has failed to address rampant bullying, including the frequent use of racial slurs and threats of violence, and that policies like prohibiting the display of Pride flags in classrooms allow discrimination to persist. Pennridge is one of the districts where Democrats who hope to overturn such policies won big gains in the recent school board election. [WHYY/NBC10]
Sixers Coach Stands By Kelly Oubre Jr.
Addressing suspicions that the Sixers forward made up his account of being hit by a car while walking near his home in Center City, coach Nick Nurse said he believed Oubre Jr.’s story. Philadelphia police said Wednesday that surveillance video from the time and location where Oubre Jr. said he was struck in a hit-and-run showed no evidence of the incident. Creating even more confusion, TMZ published Ring camera footage from Oubre Jr.’s apartment showing him wheeling a bike into his home after the accident. [Inquirer]
Police Seek Airport Luggage Thief
Philadelphia police have recovered nine suitcases that were stolen from Philadelphia International Airport, and have a warrant out for the arrest of the suspect. One of the pieces of luggage contained an Apple AirTag, which allowed an investigative reporter for ABC6 to track its meandering journey around the region, ultimately leading police to identify the suspect. Philly Voter Turnout Increased, 911 Dispatch Problems & Holiday Shopping Plans
It’s the Friday News Roundup! Host Trenae Nuri is joined by Julia Terruso, political reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Isaac Avilucea, reporter at Axios Philadelphia. They discuss local and statewide voter turnout this general election and how understaffing at 911 call centers in Philly impacts emergency response times. Plus, how Philly is gearing up for holiday shopping this year.
So it turns out the pretzel turkey has been a Thanksgiving tradition at the Philly Pretzel Factory in Langhorne for some time. A reader pointed out that they are vegetarian, not vegan, as I described them in yesterday’s edition. My bad. Either way, the real turkeys will thank you.
Have a great weekend!
