🍠 Get ready for Thanksgiving leftovers (the remix)

November 20, 2023

Happy Thanksgiving week! Fingers crossed that a major storm forecast to sweep across the country over the next few days doesn’t wreak havoc on your travel plans (and mine).

What's CITY Talking About?

Join Philly’s Reparations Taskforce

City Council seeks eight Black Philadelphians to serve on the Philadelphia Reparations Taskforce, which will develop ideas for making reparations for African Americans harmed by the legacy of slavery. Interested residents can apply for one of the eight slots — which focus on specific topics, like health and wellness — at rep215.com. [Inquirer]

Kevin Hart To Receive Mark Twain Prize

The actor, comedian, and Philadelphia native Kevin Hart has been awarded the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for lifetime achievement in American humor. Hart’s 30-plus years in show business began with doing standup at The Laff House and other Philly venues. Past recipients of the prize include Dave Chappelle, Will Farrell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. No Natural Gas for 30th Street Station

Amtrak’s plans for renovating 30th Street Station will no longer include a new natural gas heating system after environmental groups lobbied against using fossil fuels. The 100-year-old station will instead continue to use steam piped underground from an energy plant in Grays Ferry, which has plans to transition to using solar, wind, and biofuels. [WHYY]

A City Cast Philly Travel Playlist

Something to listen to if you find yourself stuck at baggage claim or in traffic this week. (Photo by John Greim/LightRocket via Getty Images)

We’re rapidly approaching the Thanksgiving holiday, which means two things: soon you’ll have to pretend to be interested in your cousin’s flailing NFT business over a plate of your aunt’s questionable stuffing, and, there’s a good chance you’ll be traveling. So to help make that plane/train/bus/car ride a little smoother, we wrangled some of our favorite City Cast Philly episodes to set you up for a proper binge listen. Safe travels!

🎧 Is PHL Really the Worst Airport in America?

If you’re flying through PHL during the busiest travel week of the year, this episode might pique your interest: a recent nationwide survey called our airport “the worst in North America” in terms of customer satisfaction. We debate that ranking and share some of our PHL travel tips.

🎧 Philly Insider’s Guide to Grocery Shopping

Anyone who’s ever made a last-minute run to the store to grab an extra can of cranberry sauce, listen up. This episode, full of Philly shopping hacks and Whole Foods hot takes, should hit that sweet spot.

🎧 Things You Didn’t Know Were Illegal in PA

If you’re planning on, say, making a profit from fortune telling or fishing with your bare hands over the holiday break, some bad news: those are just two of the (weirdly) illegal activities we go over in this crossover episode with our friends at City Cast Pittsburgh.

🎧 The Unwritten Rules of Philly Parking

Stuck in traffic on the way to grandma’s? It’s the perfect time to reflect on the distinct, multifaceted, and often complicated etiquette of parking in Philly with these “unwritten rules” from the City Cast Philly team.

🎧 Offbeat Philly Attractions from Atlas Obscura

If you’ve got some relatives in town, or just a couple days off with time to kill, this episode details some off-the-beaten-path picks for underrated tourist attractions (like, have you met Philbert the Pig?) with Dylan Thuras, the co-founder of Atlas Obscura.

Don’t Toss Your Thanksgiving Scraps, Remix Them

Day-old cranberry sauce can get a second life as a pizza or flatbread topping. (Getty Images)

This holiday season, don’t throw out your leftovers! Instead, reduce how much food you toss by making a pumpkin pie milkshake or Thanksgiving pizza. Host Trenae Nuri talks about reimagining food waste with Rachel Sherman, former pastry chef and project manager of the Drexel Food Lab, and DeAndra Forde, Drexel University doctoral student and registered dietitian.

We’re almost there! Have a fabulous day.
