👮 The lowdown on Philly’s next top cop
December 1, 2023
Happy Friday! It’s the first day of December, and already the holiday season is in full swing in Philly. See some ways the city’s getting festive this weekend in the event listings below.

What's CITY Talking About?
Another Escape From Philly Jail
An inmate escaped from a Philadelphia jail on Thursday afternoon, becoming the fourth person to break out this year. As of yesterday evening, authorities were still searching for Gino Hagenkotter, 34, who prison officials said absconded from an outdoor work assignment, hopped a fence, and fled through an adjacent sanitation yard. He was serving a sentence for theft and burglary when he escaped. [6ABC/Inquirer]
Ski Mask Ban Passes Council
Philadelphia City Council voted 13-2 to approve a ban on wearing ski masks in parks, schools, daycares, City-owned buildings, and on public transit. The ACLU and progressive council members had opposed the ban, arguing that it would further marginalize young Black men and lead to more police stops that disproportionately target them. But the council member who sponsored the bill, Anthony Phillips, who is Black, said the aim was to help residents feel safer in public. [Inquirer]
Man Released After 27 Years in Prison
A Philadelphia man whose conviction for a 1995 murder was thrown out last month is going home, after prosecutors said in court on Thursday that they didn’t have enough evidence to try him again. District Attorney Larry Krasner said that the man, Eddie Ramirez, was “likely innocent,” though the official court filings by his office did not take a position on his guilt or innocence. Krasner’s office has helped secure over 40 murder exonerations in six years. [Inquirer]
Dog Respiratory Illness Spreads to PA
Cases of a poorly understood respiratory illness have been reported in Pennsylvania pooches, according to the state Department of Agriculture. The infection reportedly does not respond to antibiotics, and veterinarians have not been able to identify the bacteria or virus that may be causing it. So far, the overall number of cases in Pennsylvania remains unknown. [CBS3]

Where Is It?

Our pre-Thanksgiving challenge was a bit too challenging. Our Hey Philly readers struck out and did not guess that this sign hangs at 1253 N. Hollywood Street in Brewerytown.
Congrats to reader Nicole V. for submitting the image and thoroughly stumping the rest of us.

This week, we’ve got a sculpture (and hint: sometimes it’s a fountain) for you to find. Send us your guesses and we’ll shout you out next week!
