🥯 The best bagels in Philly
December 19, 2023
Nice to see you again! I’m back after taking a long weekend, and it was so fun to see what holiday songs you all just can’t stand. And also a little anxiety-inducing — the mere mention of some of those tunes can get them playing in a maddening loop in my head (looking at you, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”). But it was worth it to discover Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” bop.

What's CITY Talking About?
Flooding Wreaks Havoc Across Region
Homes flooded, cars stalled in swamped streets, and first responders rescued stranded drivers as heavy rain drenched the Philadelphia area on Monday.
- The rising waters of the Darby Creek in Delaware County forced a block of homes in Darby Borough to be evacuated. [6ABC]
- In Montgomery and Bucks counties, first responders performed two dozen water rescues. In Philadelphia, flooding along the Delaware River submerged a stretch of Columbus Boulevard in Center City during the morning commute. [KYW]
- The region saw up to 5 inches of rain over a 24-hour period in some areas. [NBC10]
Parker Picks Top Deputies
Mayor-elect Cherelle Parker announced her picks for the top positions in her administration, a group she’s calling her “Big Three.” The three staffers — Sinceré Harris, Aren Platt, and Tiffany W. Thurman — will have different roles but equal authority in the Parker administration, which the Inquirer reports is an unusual arrangement. Harris and Platt, who served as Parker’s top campaign officials, will become chief deputy mayor of intergovernmental affairs, sustainability, and engagement, and chief deputy mayor of planning and strategic initiatives, respectively. Thurman will leave her post as a vice president at the Greater Philadelphia YMCA to serve as Parker’s chief of staff. [Inquirer 🔒]

Penn Vet Students Work Grueling Hours
Sixty-five students and recent alumni of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine signed a letter to administrators saying they regularly had to work more than 100 hours a week at the university veterinary hospital. That exceeds guidelines from the Student American Veterinary Medical Association, as well as workload policies at Penn’s medical school, by 20 hours. Some students suspect that Penn Vet is using their unpaid labor to make up for a shortage of vet nurses, and say that the quality of care the animals receive is suffering as a result. [Inquirer]
