💵 Why hasn’t PA raised the minimum wage?

January 12, 2024

Good almost-weekend morning! It’s not Wednesday, but I’ll probably be wearing pink today to celebrate today’s “Mean Girls” movie musical release (written and produced by Delco native Tina Fey, one of the Philly area’s best). Here’s what else is going on today and this weekend.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚔 First Latino Deputy Police Commissioner Sworn In

Longtime Philly police officer Pedro Rosario is now in charge of overseeing public safety specifically in Kensington, where he’s spent much of his 29-year career. [6ABC]

  • There’s hope among community members about his appointment, but some on-the-ground activists are skeptical of new Mayor Cherelle Parker’s approach. [Kensington Voice]

🗳️ Surprise Shift in City Commissioners Leadership

Democratic Commissioner Omar Sabir replaces Lisa Deeley, also a Democrat, as chair of the three-person body that oversees Philly’s election administration. Republican Seth Bluestein supported Sabir and proposed new rules that reduce the chair’s duties. [KYW]

🚉 Krasner Challenges PA Law Creating Special SEPTA Prosecutor

A law passed by the Legislature and signed by the governor late last year limits Philly’s district attorney’s authority over crimes committed on SEPTA property, instead making them the responsibility of a special prosecutor. District Attorney Larry Krasner is now suing to block the law, arguing that it’s unconstitutional. [AP]

🎄 Local Charities Get $3M from Eagles Christmas Album

The second holiday record by the football team’s three musically talented offensive linemen has raised over double what their 2022 album did for Philly charities. The proceeds are being split among 60+ local organizations. [CBS Philadelphia]

Where Is It?

As a fun end-of-week game, we like to test your familiarity with the cityscape by asking you to tell us the location of a piece of public art. (Philly is the country’s No. 1 street art hub, after all!)

Hey Philly readers who guessed correctly:

  • Joyce A.
  • Pete D.
  • Ian K.
  • Clinton C.
  • Laurie B.
  • Samantha P.
  • Elaine G.
  • Dale F.
  • Brian M.
  • Christine (did not give last initial)
  • Lavisha-Nadirah W.
  • Karen A.
  • Emma T.
  • Ruslan S. (who sent a photo of himself with the mural, no less)
  • Mary S.

Painted in 2015 by Mural Arts artist David McShane, the mural at 24th and Walnut shows historic moments from the Phillies’ history, featuring many of the team’s prominent players (and the Phanatic, of course). It’s eight stories high and covers 3,750 square feet.

You can read more about last week’s mural here. (The building it’s on has a pretty interesting history, too.)

Now, on to this week’s challenge, courtesy of Hey Philly reader Tim M.:

Where in the city do you think this is? Send us an email with your answer (no Googling!) — and bonus points if you can share the story behind it.

PA’s Low Minimum Wage, More Mask Mandates, & Storm Recovery

It's really like half the country that's seeing a bump in their minimum wage this year, and PA is not.
Lizzy McLellan Ravitch, Reporter, The Philadelphia Inquirer

It’s the Friday news roundup! City Cast Philly podcast host Trenae Nuri is joined by Philadelphia Inquirer reporters Lizzy McLellan Ravitch, who covers workforce issues, and Aubrey Whelan, who covers health. They discuss why Pennsylvania still hasn’t raised its minimum wage, how Philly is recovering from this week’s storm, and why hospitals in our area are bringing back mask mandates.

I’ll be back in your inbox on Tuesday morning, after the long weekend. If you’re also not working on Monday, it’s a great day to volunteer as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service — lots of local opportunities are listed here.
