⛄ Time for more…
January 19, 2024
Happy Friday! It may still be super cold outside, but I’m totally melting over all the adorable Philly area rescue dogs who will be featured in this year’s Puppy Bowl. Just look at this face! 🥺
Sasha has already won my heart. 💗 On to today’s news.

What's CITY Talking About?
❄️ It’s Not Over Yet…
ICYMI (you probably didn’t), Philly’s first substantial snowfall in nearly two years happened earlier this week. Today, the sequel: the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning yesterday afternoon projecting five to six inches of snow across the region between 4 a.m. and 10 p.m. today. [NWS]
- Fun fact: Apparently, it’s been 1,128 days (more than three years!) since Philly saw six inches of snowfall in a single day. [@NWS_MountHolly on X]
- Why’d the snow finally hit this week? [City Cast Philly 🎧]
🏫 University Antisemitism Investigation Updates
The U.S. Department of Education has closed its investigation into Penn’s alleged violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, since an existing lawsuit had similar allegations. Temple was added to the department’s list of the schools being investigated this week, and Drexel remains on the list. [The Daily Pennsylvanian]
🗳️ New GOP Challenger in U.S. Senate Race
Brandi Tomasetti, the secretary and treasurer for a Lancaster County township, plans to challenge businessman David McCormick in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Bob Casey, who’s running for reelection this year. [Pennsylvania Capital-Star]
🐔 Chicken Chain Changes
Federal Donuts — the Philly chain also known for their fried chicken sandwiches — closed two locations: one in University City and one in Pennsport, the chain’s original home. It plans to relocate both shops. [PhillyVoice]
- In other poultry-related news, the California-based Dave’s Hot Chicken is planning to open locations in Northeast Philly, Cherry Hill, and Willow Grove this year. [Philadelphia Business Journal 🔒]

Where Is It?
It’s time for our weekly “Where Is It?” challenge, where we share a piece of public art located somewhere in Philly, and you try to figure out where it is.
Here’s the image from last week, courtesy of Hey Philly reader Tim M.:

You can find this “send pierogi” astronaut mural on the 2700 block of East Allegheny Avenue, between Edgemont and Tilton Streets. Artist Evan Lovett painted the piece — which is titled “Homesick” — on the side of the real estate firm Locale Philadelphia’s Port Richmond office in 2020. Here’s a cool time lapse video of the process from Lovett’s Instagram page.
Congrats to the four Hey Philly readers who correctly guessed its location:
- Karen M.
- Lauren C.
- Martha S.
- Ron C.

If you know where it is, send us an email with your answer. No Googling, please!
