January 29, 2024

Good morning! Thank you to all the readers who pointed out that the link to the survey at the end of Friday’s newsletter didn’t work. It’s fixed now — and I’d still love for you to tell me everything you love about your neighborhood at this link.

What's CITY Talking About?

🥖 Cheesesteak Mongers Sentenced for Tax Crimes

The proprietors of Tony Luke’s Tony & Nick’s in South Philly — a father-son team — may have to shutter their business while they serve 20 months in prison for leaving $8 million in sales off their tax forms. [Inquirer 🔒]

⚖️ Wrongfully Convicted Philadelphian Sues City

Willliam Johnson, who served 18 years in prison before a judge vacated his murder conviction last year, has filed a lawsuit against the city, District Attorney's Office, and five police detectives for alleged malicious prosecution and violation of his constitutional rights. [Axios Philadelphia]

  • Johnson’s was one of many murder convictions overturned in the past six years. City Cast Philly spoke to an attorney about the impact of wrongful convictions last month. 🎧

💻 How A Rare Philly Politician Reddit Q&A Went

That Reddit AMA I mentioned last week by City Council Majority Leader Katherine Gilmore Richardson was a pretty uncommon move from a Philly politician, as they typically don’t venture onto the discussion-centric social media platform. Here’s a recap of how it went. [Billy Penn]

🥩 Hepatitis A PSA For Northeast Philly ShopRite

Philly’s Best Spas

Everyone needs a little me-time, and for some folks, that may mean hitting up a spa. In Philly, opportunities to pamper yourself can range from hours-long spa retreats to half-hour sauna sessions.

Imani Harris (@xoimaniindigo), a lifestyle content creator on TikTok and Instagram, sat down with City Cast Philly to share some of her go-to Philly spas that offer a variety of experiences and price points.

Joseph Anthony Spa and Salon

Located in the Loews Hotel, this full-service Center City spot is “somewhere that you can go and spend a few hours,” Harris says. It offers a wide range of body scrubs, float treatments, Turkish baths, massages, and facials, and it’s also got a salon and a gym.

Prices vary by service. Harris says to expect to spend somewhere in the $100–$150 range for “the full experience.”

AWAY Spa at the W Hotel

You can find another full-service hotel spa at Center City’s W Hotel. One particular draw is the W’s year-round heated rooftop pool where you can go after you get your services, says Harris, where she spent her birthday in December. “It makes you feel like it’s summer,” she says.

Prices range from $130 for a glow body treatment to $1,200 for a two-person, full-day getaway.

Heyday

The Rittenhouse location of the national facial bar chain is more of an “in-and-out” experience, Harris says. An esthetician will analyze your skin and give you recommendations for products after a 50-minute facial.

Facials start around $50 for non-members.

1735 Chestnut St.

DTXFY

The Manayunk location of DTXFY is a favorite of Harris’s, with 30-minute infrared sauna sessions that leave her feeling really relaxed.

This is one of the more affordable options — a single 30-minute massage session starts at $30, and infrared sauna sessions start at $49 for non-members.

Passyunk Ave’s Coffee Shop Lease Drama

On Passyunk Avenue, news that a beloved coffee shop is getting kicked out has some neighbors boiling over. The landlord says the shop, Black N Brew, has unpaid bills. But the shop’s owners swear they’ve paid their rent and are getting pushed out. So who’s telling the truth? City Cast Philly podcast host Trenae Nuri talks with Victor Fiorillo, senior reporter at Philadelphia Magazine, about the controversy.

So, it’s going to be February soon… What kinds of things do you like to do for Valentine’s Day in Philly? Reply and let me know! 💗
