🏥 Why primary care is hard to find
February 21, 2024
Good morning! Welcome to Wednesday. I hope your morning commute today is farm animal-free! (If you have no idea why I’m saying that, keep reading.)

What's CITY Talking About?
🐴 Horsing Around on I-95
Early-morning drivers yesterday spotted a horse galloping down the side of the interstate before sunrise. Somehow, the horse made it off the highway safely, and police managed to corral it in Port Richmond near the Allegheny Avenue exit. [6ABC]
- The horse belonged to the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, which told PhillyVoice on Tuesday that somebody "may have deliberately tampered" with its enclosures after hours. [PhillyVoice]
- 💬 Tell me: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve personally seen happen on a Philly road or highway? Reply to share your story, and your response may be featured in a future newsletter.
🚙 Pedestrian Hit-and-Runs on the Rise
Hit-and-run deaths have been on the rise locally since 2020, and they continued to increase in 2023. Philly police recorded 39 deadly hit-and-runs last year, and four so far this year. [NBC10]

☕ Ultimo Baristas Authorize Strike
All but one of Ultimo Coffee’s dozen unionized baristas voted to authorize a strike to put pressure on negotiations. The local coffee chain and its unionized workers have yet to agree on a first contract, and records show both sides have filed complaints with National Labor Relations Board about the process. 🎟️ Get Your Roots Picnic Tickets
Lil Wayne and Jill Scott will headline this year’s Roots Picnic, which takes place on June 1 and 2 in Fairmount Park. [Philadelphia Tribune 🔒]
- The ticket presale kicked off yesterday morning, and the general sale starts this Friday at 10 a.m. Find info about ticket packages here. [Roots Picnic website]

Where Is It?
It’s “Where Is It” Wednesday! Get ready for this week’s public art identification challenge.
But first, let’s take a look at last week’s mural mystery, submitted by Hey Philly reader Susan D.:

This piece is located in the Olde Kensington/Ludlow area, at the intersection of Germantown Avenue and West Oxford Street. It was spray painted by the artist couple Menace Two and Resa Piece — aka @menaceresa — who hail from Queens in New York City. They’re currently traveling the country with the goal of spray painting murals in all 50 states.
Congrats to Karen S. and Sean D. for recognizing this spot!
Now, onto this week’s challenge, submitted by Hey Philly reader Meera S.
For this one, I’ll give you a hint, but also make it a little harder — this mosaic is located near a well-traveled thoroughfare, close to a popular Philly attraction. So, your challenge this week is to tell me the name of the side street where you can find this art:

Where is it? Let me know what your guess is here, or by replying to this email. And remember — we’re working on the honor system, so no looking it up!

If I can get frustrated doing this, and I know how to do it and how to work the system in theory, what's everyone else going through?
How To Find Primary Care in Philly – And Why It's Hard
Many Philadelphians don’t have a primary care physician and it can take months just to get an appointment with one. City Cast Philly podcast host Trenae Nuri talks with Kelly McGuigan, a medical student at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, about barriers to care and her tips for finding a PCP.

One more request before you go: Hey Philly rounded up some of the city’s best pizza spots a few months ago. What local gems did we miss? Reply and let me know!
