💰 Is this tax break hurting Philly schools?

February 28, 2024

Good morning! Have you ever looked at Philly rapper (and fashion icon) Tierra Whack and thought, “Wow, I’d love to raid her closet”? Well… now, you sort of can.

What's CITY Talking About?

🩺 Temple Nurses Union To Vote on Strike

Unionized nurses at Temple University Hospital’s Jeanes Campus plan to vote tomorrow on whether to authorize a strike. The union’s contract expired Nov. 7, and it’s been in negotiations with Temple over new terms since early September. [The Temple News]

🏙️ More People Are Living in Center City

While foot traffic still hasn’t made it back to pre-pandemic levels, a new report from Center City District shows that Philly’s downtown core has gained — not lost — residents over the past few years. [KYW]

📹 Ring Video Controversy in Auditor General Race

An indoor Ring camera captured Philly state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta — who’s running both for reelection and for state auditor general — saying that his Democratic primary opponent in the auditor general race, Lehigh County Controller Mark Pinsley, doesn’t “like Black people.”

  • Jon Hankins, who’s challenging Kenyatta for his legislative seat in the Democratic primary, posted the video to his Facebook page. Pinsley has called Kenyatta’s remarks divisive, and Kenyatta has responded to the incident by saying he “won’t be distracted by dirty political tricks.” [Pennsylvania Capital-Star]

Where Is It?

Welcome to our Wednesday geolocation challenge!

Last week, I showed you a photo submitted by Hey Philly reader Meera S. and asked you to tell me the name of the specific side street where you could find this mosaic:

An Isaiah Zagar mosaic on the side of a building.

You can find this Isaiah Zagar piece on Clifton Street. It’s installed on the side of a private residence right off of South Street, just steps away from Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens.

It seems like this one was challenging! A few folks recognized this side street as intersecting with South Street, but no one specifically named Clifton Street. Debra C. came super close with a guess of Alder Street, which is just one street over from Clifton. There's a different beautiful Zagar piece that lives in that alleyway, pictured below. (Thanks to Meera for sending us this photo as well!)

Now, let’s move onto this week’s piece, submitted by Hey Philly reader Kavya U.:

A mural on the side of the building showing an illustration of a man with hearts, a guitar, a flag, and a tulip. The words "Where are you guys going, the musics this way?", "you what's up?", and "DAVID WILLIAM BRADBURN" are also painted on the mural.

Where in Philly is this musical mural? For this challenge, don’t worry about being as specific as last week — the cross streets, the street plus the neighborhood, or a nearby landmark is fine. But no Googling!

Let me know of your guess here, or reply to this email.

This Tax Break Costs Philly Public Schools Millions

A state-run program called Keystone Opportunity Zones gives tax breaks to businesses planning to develop blighted or abandoned properties in the city. But public schools in Philly are partially funded by these taxes, and miss out on millions of dollars in revenue each year as a result. City Cast Philly host Trenae Nuri speaks with Emily Rizzo, freelance reporter at Chalkbeat Philadelphia, about the pros and cons of this program.

Have a great day!
