💰 Mayor Parker’s funding priorities
March 20, 2024
Good morning! As promised last week, today’s City Cast Philly podcast episode breaks down our new mayor’s first budget proposal and how it would enact her priorities for the city. Give it a listen here 🎧💸

What's CITY Talking About?
🚌 New Bus Terminal Plan Floated
A preliminary plan for a semi-permanent intercity bus terminal would place a PPA-managed site in a parking lot in Northern Liberties. It would include a modular building with bathrooms, two ticket offices, and marked bus slips. [Billy Penn]
- The terminal would be right across the street from the current, temporary bus stop. We spoke with Billy Penn reporter Meir Rinde in December about how that interim solution has been received. [City Cast Philly 🎧]
👮 Fourth Bus Stop Shooting Suspect Arrested
A 17-year-old wanted for attempted murder in the shooting at a Burholme bus stop earlier this month was reportedly taken into police custody in Alexandria, Virginia on Tuesday. [6ABC]

🌳 Rittenhouse Square Lawn Restoration
The popular park’s grass lawns will undergo their first large-scale repairs in about two decades. The improvements, funded by a $200,000 state grant, will take about four years and will require some segments of the park to close. [PhillyVoice]
🛫 ‘Encampment Clearing Initiative’ at PHL
The city spent two weeks in late February and early March clearing people experiencing homelessness from Philadelphia International Airport. It’s unclear how many people were removed. The city is now seeking proposals for a program that would train PHL employees on how to engage with people experiencing homelessness and discourage sheltering at the airport. [Inquirer 🔒]
🛣️ Changes Ahead for Roosevelt Boulevard
Speed cameras on Roosevelt Boulevard led to 95% less speeding along the thoroughfare, according to a University of Pennsylvania study. But it’s still Philly’s most dangerous road, so the city is revamping parts of it, with construction beginning in 2027. [WHYY]
- After that pilot program on Roosevelt Boulevard, speed cameras are coming to five more Philly streets. Here’s why. [City Cast Philly 🎧]

Where Is It?
Welcome back to “Where Is It,” the weekly segment where I show you some public art and you tell me where in Philly you can see it.
Last week, I showed you this photo from Hey Philly reader Abby M.:

Called “Freedom School,” this mural is located on Girard Avenue in Brewerytown, between 30th and 31st streets. It depicts several civil rights icons, including Malcolm X, Ella Baker, Martin Luther King, and Frederick Douglass. Mural Arts artist Parris Stancell installed it in 2002.
Congrats to all the readers who correctly guessed the location:

Inside Mayor Parker's $6.3B Budget Plan
Mayor Cherelle Parker’s first budget proposal follows up on her campaign promise to make Philly “the safest, cleanest, and greenest big city in the nation,” with more funding for police technology and street cleaning. City Cast Philly podcast host Trenae Nuri speaks with Sean Collins Walsh, City Hall reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer, about what this budget says about Parker’s ambitions and whether or not City Council is likely to approve it.

To the Leslie Knopes of Philly: I’m still searching for the city’s best waffles. Hit me up if you know a spot!
