🌸 Where Philly got its cherry blossoms
March 27, 2024
Good morning — our hearts go out to everyone in Baltimore after yesterday’s tragic bridge collapse.

What's CITY Talking About?
🏫 School District Pilots Trauma Response Program
Fifteen schools in the 22nd Police District will pilot a program called “Handle With Care.” The initiative will train 300 police officers and 100 educators on how to recognize when students have been exposed to violence and how to help the children cope with trauma. [Chalkbeat Philadelphia]
🥩 Jim’s Targets May 1 Reopening
The popular South Street cheesesteak shop will reopen for the first time since July 2022, when it was damaged in a fire. The shop's expanded space will include ADA-compliant seating, a takeout window, Jim’s merch for sale, and a dedicated entrance for delivery drivers. [Inquirer 🔒]

💵 Philly To Lose 6 Family Dollar Stores

🗳️ ‘Uncommitted’ Effort Launches in PA
Earlier this week, the Democratic Socialists of America kicked off a campaign to urge Democratic voters in Pennsylvania to write in “uncommitted” on their primary ballots in the presidential race, as a way to “pressure the Biden administration to reconsider” its position on the Israel–Hamas War. Where Is It?
Hello, and welcome back to our weekly “Where Is It?” challenge, in which I show you a piece of public art, and you tell me where in Philadelphia you can find it.
Last week’s challenge was a mural submitted by Hey Philly reader Patricia C.:

Located around 13th and Pine in the Gayborhood — across the street from Dirty Frank's — this mural is called “Spring.” First painted in 2000 (it’s since been restored twice), “Spring” is part of a series by artist David Guinn. Guinn painted murals corresponding to the three other seasons too, which you can find scattered around Philly.
Shoutout to Hey Philly reader Savannah S. for knowing the location AND sharing that fun fact! And congrats to everyone else who managed to locate the mural:

Today on City Cast
For decades, Germantown was a place that developers simply didn't go. I'm not going to say that there was no development activity, but in terms of private residential development, it was pretty scant.
New Housing Is Coming to Germantown. Will Gentrification Follow?
Germantown is going through a transformation, as hundreds of new housing units in the neighborhood come on the market. This investment is coming to a place with a deep sense of pride and a history of being overlooked by developers. Some residents hope these new projects will attract more businesses, while others fear changes to the neighborhood could price out longtime residents. City Cast Philly podcast host Trenae Nuri speaks with Aaron Moselle, housing and community development reporter with WHYY’s PlanPhilly, about the likelihood of rapid gentrification here.
