Philly Chatter: Crowning an ‘Official State Candy’

Could these soon be our new state candy? (Wirestock/Getty Images)

Our state legislature has been having a delicious debate: Should the Hershey’s Kiss be named Pennsylvania’s official state candy?

A bill that passed 130–71 in the Pennsylvania House last month would make it so, if it also passes the state Senate and is approved by the governor.

Inspired by an effort by Bucks County middle school students several years ago, Rep. Thomas L. Mehaffie III of Dauphin County — whose district includes Hershey — introduced the bill. Some lawmakers have opposed the legislation, arguing that it’s unfair to favor Hershey over the commonwealth’s other candy companies.

When I initially shared this news with you, I asked Hey Philly readers to weigh in on the debate.

These were your suggestions for what the state’s signature sweet should be ⬇️

🍫 Wilbur Buds

Hey Philly reader Susan D. nominated these bite-sized candies, made by a Lititz-based chocolate company. “Much better than a Hershey's Kiss!” Susan wrote.

🐣 Peeps

Hey Philly reader Scarlett M. vouched for these classic Easter marshmallow candies, produced by the Bethlehem-based company Just Born Quality Confections. Controversial? 🤔

😘 Hershey’s Kisses

A few of you wrote in to concur with the state House’s pick of Hershey Chocolate’s iconic candy. “What a happy symbol of PA,” wrote Hey Philly reader Chris K.

🥜 Goldenberg Peanut Chews 🏅🏅🏅

State legislature, listen up: These bite-sized, Philly-born candies got the most nominations from Hey Philly readers. Jennifer S. called them an authentic “Philadelphia favorite,” and Ruby K. argued the candies’ more substantial composition earns them some points.

“Peanut Chews have nuts, caramel, and chocolate,” Ruby wrote. “Hershey Kisses just [have] chocolate.”

🍬 Is your mouth watering yet? If it isn’t already, I bet that’ll change once you listen to this podcast episode ranking Philly’s most iconic candies.
