🦑 The story behind Philly’s “get squid facts” posters

May 22, 2024 · — Asha Prihar

Good morning! I saw a tweet yesterday that raised a great question: if Philly had a Mount Rushmore, who’d be on it? I’m also wondering … where in the city would we put our own Mount Rushmore? Let me know if you have thoughts.

A tweet that reads, "Who's on the Mount Rushmore of Philadelphians? William Penn and Ben Franklin obviously, but trying to think of who should be the other two?"
Who do you think would fit well on a theoretical Philly Mount Rushmore? (@JawadPullin on X)

Where Is It?

It’s time for our weekly public art location game, where I show you one of Philly’s many murals (or other public art), and you try to guess where it is.

Let’s start by reviewing last week’s challenge, submitted by former City Cast Philly executive producer Laura Benshoff:

A colorful mural of several people dancing.
Where in Philly can you find this colorful art? (Laura Benshoff/City Cast Philly)

This mural is located around 12th and Pearl Streets behind the Asian Arts Initiative, just north of Chinatown. Painted by artist Josh Cochran, it’s called “Strobe Lights,” and it’s meant to celebrate the performers who come to the AAI to do their work.

Shoutout to Hey Philly readers Matthew R. and Joyce L. for guessing the location.

Now, on to this week’s challenge, which comes courtesy of Hey Philly reader Siani C.:

A large mural of a bird underneath a bridge.
Where’s this bird hanging out? (Siani C./reader submission)

Where is it? Email me your guess, or let me know here.

Today on City Cast

We’re on the streets of a major American city with all these distractions, and this is not meant to be a history lecture. So these five to seven minute stories are focused on great moments. For example, where Billy Bartram, the future botanist, wrestles an alligator down in Georgia.
