What's CITY Talking About?
⚖️ Bill Allowing CPOC to Unseat Members Advances
The council’s public safety committee advanced a bill on Tuesday that would grant the Citizens Police Oversight Commission’s members the power to remove a fellow commissioner. Previously, only the City Council had that authority. Commissioner Rosaura Thomas testified that she believes she is the bill’s target. Thomas was recently accused of sending confidential information to someone outside the commission. [KYW]
🏥 CHOP and Keystone First Reach Multiyear Contract
After months of negotiations, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Keystone First, the largest Medicaid health plan in the region, announced a deal on Tuesday. The new contract ensures children covered under Medicaid can continue receiving treatment after the current contract ends on June 30. [Inquirer 🔒]
✈️ New Direct Flights From PHL
Two of Philadelphia International’s largest carriers are launching new flights just in time for your summer plans. Craving real pizza? Flights to Naples, Italy, on American Airlines start at $908 roundtrip. Or, if you’re looking for beach fun, you can fly Frontier to Pensacola, Florida. And, even more new flights to tropical destinations are coming later this year. [Axios Philadelphia]
🪵 Fallen Trees Converted into Building Materials
Trees that have fallen due to disease, natural disasters, or decay are getting a new life thanks to the city’s “restoration hub” at Fairmount Park, which upcycles the trees into new materials. The hub also serves as a workforce development program, providing Philadelphians 18-30 years old with job skills. [PhillyVoice]
