☀️ Summer fun guides: PA beer, NYC day trip
June 5, 2024 · — Asha Prihar
Good morning! As part of our Hey Philly summer day trip guide series, I asked Natalia Aldana, an NYC local and editor at City Cast, to share some tips on how to make the most of a day in the Big Apple. You can find her advice below!
Looking for even more summer fun? Tune in to today’s episode of the City Cast Philly podcast to hear about some of the top Pennsylvania craft breweries you can hit up during the warm months 🍻

What's CITY Talking About?
🏛️ UArts Updates
University of the Arts president Kerry Walk resigned yesterday, just three days before the school’s closure. [CBS3]
- Meanwhile, Temple is exploring whether it could save UArts through a merger, according to the chair of Temple's board. [Inquirer 🔒]
- Here’s a refresher on why the university is closing so suddenly. [City Cast Philly 🎧]
🚔 North Philly Gun Violence Arrests
Philly District Attorney Larry Krasner and Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel announced earlier this week that eight people responsible for at least four deadly shootings had been arrested. All but one were members of the Big Naddy Gang, which operated in Strawberry Mansion. [NBC10]
📚 Library Author Events Confusion
The fundraising arm of the Free Library of Philadelphia says it will not be canceling its current author events lineup, despite an email blast earlier this week saying otherwise. “We have learned that a former staff member has spread misinformation,” the Free Library Foundation wrote. Reportedly, the whole team that oversees these events has resigned. [Inquirer 🔒]
🤔 Is Colin Bridgerton a Gritty Admirer?
A behind-the-scenes photo of “Bridgerton” star Luke Newton wearing a “Gritty Snax” T-shirt has folks on social media scratching their heads. Why would the British actor — who has no obvious connections to Philly — rep the Flyers mascot? The mystery remains unsolved. [Inquirer 🔒]

Where Is It?
Ready for our local mural location game? Last week, I asked you to tell me where in Philly this colorful mural — submitted by Hey Philly reader Patricia C. — lives:

This mural, called “Finally on 13th,” is located on 13th Street between Pine and Spruce Streets in the Gayborhood. It’s meant to celebrate Philly’s ballroom scene and the Black and brown LGBTQ people who’ve given it life. The mural, which was designed by the artist Nile Livingston with input from the community and dedicated last year, depicts real-life Philly ballroom legends.
You can read more about how the mural came to be here.
Shoutout to Hey Philly readers Bettie K., Katharine K., Jessica P., Sonya L., and Erin M. for being able to locate the mural!
Now, on to this week’s challenge. Hey Philly reader Rosa G. submitted this mural:

So … where is it? Let me know the neighborhood and/or street where this is located. Submit your guess here, or send me an email! (No Googling, please.)

Day Trip Guide: New York City

New York, New York: It’s a wonderful town (or so goes the song)! It’s the concrete jungle where dreams are made of (like that other tune), and if you’ve been dreaming of the best way to spend a day in the city that never sleeps, this guide is for you.
This guide will focus on Manhattan because it’s nearly impossible to visit all of New York City’s five boroughs in one day. And this guide is far from exhaustive — but it will definitely give you a great starting point for your adventures.
📸 See an NYC Icon Without the Costly Lines
Want to see the Statue of Liberty but don’t have the time or budget for the full tour? Take the free Staten Island Ferry that’ll bring you within a mile of Lady Liberty. The Top of the Rock observation deck is also amazing if you have time to wait in line. If not, find a rooftop bar to take in the views.
Up for a self-guided walking tour? I suggest this walk to see six iconic spots, from Union Square to Rockefeller Center.
Decide what you’ll regret not seeing, and make that site and any others within a short distance your priority.
😍 Explore a Neighborhood
Choose a community or two and walk around, wander into its shops, sit on its benches to people watch, and take in the neighborhood’s unique charm.
Want to explore a neighborhood with a rich history? Try Chinatown or the Lower East Side. Love fashion and shopping? Soho is for you. The Upper East Side is perfect for fans of shows set in NYC, and a quick hop over to Central Park. If you’re a jazz fan, head up to Harlem. Whatever your style, there’s a New York City neighborhood for you.
