People who are behind the signs are being more conscious of … who lives in this area, who we need to address, who needs to get the information of what we are offering … it’s just a beautiful thing, all these languages together in one single sign.
How Language Is Changing in Three Philly Neighborhoods
Philly is a city of neighborhoods, and those neighborhoods are always changing — including the way written language is used in public spaces. Daniel Guarin, a PhD candidate in Hispanic linguistics at Temple University, looked at over 3,000 signs in Fairhill’s “Golden Block,” Olney, and the Italian Market area. City Cast Philly podcast host Trenae Nuri chats with Guarin about his findings, and how these neighborhoods have evolved linguistically.
