July 10, 2024 · — Asha Prihar

Good morning! Yesterday, the City Cast Philly team went on a little reporting adventure 🐯 Here’s a clue as to where we were …

Is this hint too obvious? (Asha Prihar/City Cast Philly)

Where Is It?

Now that the week of the Fourth has passed, we’re returning from our one-week “Where Is It” hiatus. If you aren’t familiar with this weekly segment, it’s basically just a little guessing game: I show you a photo of some public art in the city, and you tell me where it’s located.

Let’s reveal the location of our most recent photo, submitted by Hey Philly reader Karen S.:

Where in Philly can you find these laser eyes? (Karen S./reader submission)

Hey Philly readers Endia E. and Brit B. were able to figure this one out — congrats! It’s at Amber & Berges Street in Kensington, painted on the corner of the Zembo Temple of Skate & Design, a local skate shop.

According to a post on the business’s social media page, the mural — created by local muralist Evan Lovett and another artist with the Instagram handle @getoffmylawnnn — is a nod to the work of editorial cartoonist Jack Hamm.

For this week’s challenge, I’m sharing a photo taken by Hey Philly reader Antonina A.:

A very large mural showing a civilization by a river.
Where can you find this detailed mural? (Antonina A./reader submission)

So … where is it? Submit your guess here, or by replying to this email. This game operates on the honor system, so no looking up the answer online!

Today on City Cast

There is an ice cream style named after Philly. And not only that, Philly was the focal point of America’s culinary talent, especially in the 19th century, and that culinary talent, for the most part, was also Black.
Sarah Lohman, Food Historian

How Philly Changed Ice Cream

Ice cream was invented more than two thousand years ago, but 19th-century Philadelphians played a significant role in revolutionizing the process. So how come we don’t know about them? City Cast Philly podcast host Trenae Nuri talks with food historian (and host of the City Cast Las Vegas podcast) Sarah Lohman about Philadelphia-style ice cream, and the women and Black culinary professionals whose innovations made it what it is today.

Speaking of frozen treats … apparently, Rita’s has debuted a new water ice flavor that’s supposed to taste like grape Nerds candy, and I’m really not sure how I feel about that 😬

Enjoy your Wednesday!
