Where Is It?

Welcome back to “Where Is It,” Hey Philly’s weekly public art hunt. The game is pretty simple: I show you something from our city’s huge collection of public art, and you let me know where you can find it.

First, the big reveal! Hey Philly reader Elaine G. submitted last week’s mural:

A mural on a corner of a building with a child raising his hand in the air. The words below it say, "I am large, I contain multitudes."
Have you seen this mural? (Elaine G./reader submission)

This mural, called “Boy With Raised Arm,” is located at 40th Street and Powelton Avenue, on the corner of the Red Cross House. It’s a replica of a mural that acclaimed Philly-born artist Sidney Goodman designed and installed elsewhere on the same block in 1990. Artist Brian Senft re-created it at its current location in 2002, when a construction project claimed the original version.

The quote in the mural — “I am large, I contain multitudes” — comes from Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself.” The mural, according to the Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania blog, was “designed with the intention to inspire and lift up the viewer – whether disaster client, Red Crosser, or member of the neighborhood.”

Eight Hey Philly readers knew where to find “Boy With Raised Arm.” Shoutout to Adam T., Tammy R., Allison D., Pamela L.-R., Bonita G., Renee N., Ruby K., and Nadia M.!

Now, let’s move on to this week’s art, which I photographed a few weeks ago:

Could Governor Shapiro Become Vice President Shapiro?

The 2024 presidential election cycle took a turn on Sunday when President Joe Biden announced he wasn’t running for reelection and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate. While Harris isn’t officially solidified as the nominee yet, there’s been talk about who could be her running mate.

City Cast Philly podcast host Trenae Nuri speaks with Stephen Caruso of Spotlight PA and Julia Terruso of The Philadelphia Inquirer about how likely it is that Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro gets picked as the vice presidential nominee.

Speaking of Shapiro, our governor is apparently embracing #bratsummer.

Enjoy your Thursday!
