Good morning! Do you know of any exciting new restaurants opening in your neighborhood? If so, I’d love to hear about them — drop me a line 😋

What's CITY Talking About?
🏫 Some Funding for Asbestos Fixes
The School District of Philadelphia plans to use a $7.8-million state grant to help offset the cost of asbestos remediation in its buildings, like Frankford High School, which needs $20 million in repairs. [WHYY]
- In other Philly school news: For every touchdown he makes this season, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will donate $5,000 toward air conditioning in local public schools. [NBC10]
🔎 Bus Stop Ad Mystery Partially Solved
“Satirical street artist” Winston Tseng confirmed that he created the art that made it look like the Eagles were endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris — but he said he doesn’t know how posters of it ended up at a few SEPTA stops last week. [Billy Penn]
🏚️ Saving the Tanner House
Friends of the Tanner House has published a report about its efforts to work with Strawberry Mansion neighbors to decide on the best way to use the childhood home of the renowned artist Henry Ossawa Tanner. [Inquirer 🔒]
- Context: The historic building is in the midst of being preserved after falling into disrepair. Earlier this year, the co-coordinator of Friends of the Tanner House joined the City Cast Philly podcast to talk about the preservation process. 🎧

Get To Know Pennsport

Pennsport is a lot of things. On one side of I-95, it’s a neighborhood filled with rowhome-lined residential streets and the center of Philadelphia’s Mummer culture, and on the other, it houses big-box shopping centers and the southernmost section of the Delaware River Trail.
Originally part of the colonial-era Southwark District, Pennsport includes the area between 4th Street, Washington Avenue, Snyder Avenue, and the Delaware River.
How can you spend a day in this South Philly neighborhood? Here are some starting points.
🌳 Enjoy the Outdoors
Pennsport has some nice pockets of green space, excellent for spending a nice spring or summer day outdoors.
Dickinson Square Park offers shaded benches, a playground, a basketball court, and lots of goings-on (you can keep track of them in the Friends of Dickinson Square Park Facebook group), including a weekly farmers market. Jefferson Square Park also has a park friends group on Facebook where you can keep up with its happenings. Toward the edge of the neighborhood, Washington Avenue Pier offers a nice riverside getaway.
☕ Sip and Relax
Get yourself a little treat and enjoy some rest on the folding chairs outside Herman’s, a neighborhood favorite coffee shop and specialty market. If you prefer to drink your coffee indoors or at the park, try dropping by Rebel & Wolf Cafe, where you can also get a delicious döner-inspired sandwich featuring fresh veggies and a mixture of four different flavorful sauces.

Where Is It?

Welcome back to “Where Is It,” our weekly public art location game! Let’s review last week’s challenge, pictured above, before jumping into this week’s.
📍 You can find this mural, called “Theater of Life,” at Broad & Lombard in Center City.
🎭 The story behind this massive, multi-dimensional mural is super cool. Artists Meg Saligman, Heather Fenton, and Juan Dimida created “Theatre of Life” in 2002, and at the time, it was Mural Arts’ most expensive mural to produce.
The art was inspired by 100 Philly artists’ answers to the prompt, “What controls you?” It seeks to show the roles that we play in the drama that is real life, whether by choice or not. (You can read more here about what some of the specific figures represent.)
According to the Public Art Archive, the materials used to create “Theatre of Life” included:
- 400 gallons of paint
- 5,000 marbles
- 10,000+ pieces of glass
- A ton of concrete
And, per Saligman’s website, the mural has a surface area of 5,000 square feet. Whoa!
🌟 “Theatre of Life” is pretty hard to miss, so today’s list of winners is long (31 people! woohoo!), and I unfortunately only have space to name the first 10 correct respondents: Shelby B. Treshia H., Ryan K., Stearns M., Joya K., Kenny W., Cyn J., Charles M., Allison D., and Jon S. Great job, everyone!
🎨 Now for this week’s challenge … can you locate the mural below?

If you think you know where you can find this art, submit your guess here, or send me an email. No Googling the answer, please!
