Grab a Bite at One of These New Philly Eateries

Philadelphia has one of the hottest food scenes in the country, and Hey Philly is here to help you stay on top of what’s new with it.
With dishes ranging from soul food eggrolls to vegan sandwiches to chicken fingers, here’s a look at some of the Philly restaurants, bars, and cafés that have opened in recent months and what they have to offer.
🥡 Black Dragon Takeout | 5260 Rodman St. (Cobbs Creek)
This much-anticipated fusion restaurant from chef and activist Kurt Evans opened up in West Philly in late August. With it, Evan seeks to combine Black American cuisine with “the familiar aesthetics of classic Chinese American takeout.” Menu items include soul egg rolls, oxtail rangoon, fried chicken fried rice, gumbo lo mein, sweet potato donuts, and more.
🥪 Unity Kitchen | 4371 Main St. (Manayunk)
This quick-service sandwich shop replaces The Volstead, one of the Philly area’s first nonalcoholic bars. It’s run by the same folks (Unity Hospitality Group), and the menu boasts vegan sandwiches like a tofu banh mi, meaty options like “Porky’s Revenge!” (a sandwich topped with BBQ pulled pork and Cajun waffle fries), shakes, and nonalcoholic beers and canned cocktails.
🐔 Raising Cane’s | 2329 Cottman Ave. (Rhawnhurst)
The Louisiana-based chicken finger chain opened its fourth location in Philly proper on Sept. 10. Its menu is the same as other Cane’s locations, featuring chicken fingers, chicken sandwiches, crinkle fries, cole slaw, and Texas toast. Tip: If you go, ask for a Caniac Club card and register it online so you can get the occasional freebie.
🍷 Pray Tell | 1615 N. Hancock St. (Olde Kensington)
Run by Tom Caruso, a winemaker originally from South Philly who recently moved back to the city from the West Coast, this 21+ wine tasting room opened to the public in early August. Pray Tell serves wines from the same-named brand, which Caruso began in 2017 as a way to make wines that “align with [his] own values and exploration.”
🍣 Chubby Nori | 146 N. 10th St., Floor 2 (Chinatown)
Sweet potato, eel, spicy scallop, and KBBQ wagyu handrolls all feature on the menu at this new spot above Chubby Cattle, which specializes in Temaki-style sushi. It’s a partnership between the Chubby Group and Boston’s Matsunori Handroll Bar.
🍪 Coming Soon: Taylor Chip | 1807 Chestnut St. (Rittenhouse) & 1828 Frankford Ave. (Fishtown)
This Lancaster County cookie company is set to land in two Philly neighborhoods on Saturday, Sept. 21. The menu will feature a wide variety of big cookies with gooey centers — including vegan and non-gluten options — as well as ice cream and coffee.
