🎉 6 Philly fests to attend this weekend
September 20, 2024 · — Asha Prihar
Did someone say “news quiz”? Oh, wait, that was me. I’ve got this week’s local current events trivia ready for you, and IMO, it’s a pretty fun one. It’s five questions and takes just two minutes … and I’m willing to look the other way if you refer back to previous editions of Hey Philly to figure out the answers 👀

What's CITY Talking About?
⚖️ Discrimination Suit Against Register of Wills
John Sabatina is facing a lawsuit from five Register of Wills former employees, alleging that he fired 19 employees of color in the office when he took over from his predecessor, Tracey Gordon, and replaced them with white employees. [Axios Philadelphia]
💼 Immigrants Help Grow the Workforce
A recent report from Pew Charitable Trusts found that foreign-born residents — who make up around 16% of Philly’s population — have been important to growing the city’s labor force. They comprise around 20% of the workforce and one third of all local business owners. [WHYY]
🫀 Return Date Set for the Giant Heart
The Franklin Institute’s iconic, oversized replica of an anatomical heart will be open to the public once again on Nov. 23 as part of a new “Body Odyssey” exhibit. [PhillyVoice]
🚚 Food Truck Market Coming to Fishtown
Philly’s night mayor has partnered with Fishtown District to bring late-night vendors to the area outside the Fillmore on the weekends starting next month. [City Cast Philly 🎧]
- On today’s episode of the City Cast Philly podcast, our host and guests discuss this new marketplace and more, including Mayor Parker’s stance on the Sixers arena, Vice President Kamala Harris’ NABJ interview, and more.

Philly Chatter: Where To Go Leaf Peeping

We’ve got a good bit of time before the leaves start changing in and around Philly — SmokyMountains.com predicts we’ll see peak autumn colors around late October.
But it’s never too early to start daydreaming about the best ways to get lost in our region’s beautiful foliage. (Can you tell I’m a fall girlie?)
Earlier this week, I shared some resources for tracking the Philly area’s leaf colors as they change — and I also asked Hey Philly readers to share your favorite spots to see fall foliage both inside and outside the city. Here’s what some of you said.
🍁 Pennypack Park in Northeast Philly is Patti’s Philly pick.
- 🌺 Patti also recommends taking a trip to Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve in Bucks County.
👟 Kavya U. likes to hit some of Philly’s great trails, like the Trolley Trail in Fairmount Park and Forbidden Drive in Wissahickon Valley Park.
- 🍂 Kavya’s other faves: Valley Forge National Historical Park, Ridley Creek State Park in Delco, and Black Run Preserve in South Jersey.
🚶 Pam W. enjoys weekly hikes around the Wissahickon with her local hiking and adventure club.
⛰️ Francis E. Walter Dam in Luzerne County and anywhere around the Delaware Water Gap are on Emmy G.’s list of favorite leaf peeping spots.
🏛️ Within Philly, Jos W. likes to enjoy the fall colors by the reflecting pool at the Barnes Foundation.
- 🌳 Outside the city, Jos recommends Reeds Gap State Park in Mifflin County, about a three-hour drive from Philly: “I haven't done fall there but I bet it would be fantastic.”
🚆 My rec? Enjoy the foliage from SEPTA. Just like in a car, you can cover a lot of ground while sitting down. But you don’t have to stress about keeping your eyes on the road or paying for gas or tolls. A one-day “Anywhere” pass costs $13.
