🐮 Cheesesteaks … minus the steak
September 25, 2024 · — Asha Prihar
Welcome back to City Cast Philly’s Cheesesteak Week, brought to you by our friends at Tecovas!
Today’s topic? Alternatives — meaning, versions of the cheesesteak that deviate from the cheese/meat/roll you typically expect. Have a listen to today’s podcast episode here, or scroll down for a little preview (and then have a listen).

What's CITY Talking About?
🌊 Graffiti Pier’s Future
Conrail plans to sell Graffiti Pier to the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation before the year ends, which would allow it to be transformed into a public park — a plan that was originally announced back in 2019 but hasn’t seen much movement since. [PhillyVoice]
🏛️ Controversial Penn Prof To Be Suspended
Penn will uphold sanctions on law professor Amy Wax, a controversial figure who’s made racially discriminatory comments and invited a white nationalist to speak to her class. She’ll be suspended with half pay for the 2025-26 school year. [Inquirer 🔒]
🌟 Central High Earns Blue Ribbon
The U.S. Department of Education has named Central High School a Blue Ribbon School for the third time. The honor recognizes high-performing schools, particularly ones where there’s been progress in closing racial and socioeconomic achievement gaps. [Chalkbeat Philadelphia]
🚌 Hydrogen-Powered Bus Pilot
SEPTA plans to test out 10 hydrogen fuel cell buses in Philly and the suburbs this fall. The results of the pilot will help inform how many of this type of bus will be incorporated into the transit authority’s 1,300-bus fleet in the future. [WHYY]

Where Is It?

Welcome back to our weekly local art location challenge! The rules are simple: I show you a photo of some public art, and you tell me where in Philly you can find it. Hey Philly reader Bettie K. provided last week’s photo, which is pictured above.
📍 This mural — “Tribute to Edward ‘Chick’ Davis” by John Lewis — is located at 1412 South St. in Center City.
🎱 The story: It depicts Chick Davis, a businessman and renowned billiards player who toured the country playing the game. According to the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia, Davis — who passed away in 2006, when he was 99 years old — learned how to play at Philly’s first Black YMCA on Christian Street.
Davis ended up opening a billiards parlor of his own at Broad & Bainbridge, aiming to create a space that was inclusive to all, regardless of race or gender. He later opened a different parlor on Broad, and another on South Street.
🏆 Congrats to this week’s winners: Howard M., Tori C., Treshia H., Joe G., Kathy M., Colin M., Jon S., Nina W., and John C.
☑️ Now, moving along. Today’s (cheesesteak-related!) challenge is brought to you by none other than City Cast Philly producer Abby Fritz:
