October 3, 2024 · — Asha Prihar
Good morning! Today, we’re going to pull back the curtain a bit on the making of this newsletter — and our podcast, City Cast Philly — by introducing you to someone who’s going to be pivotal in producing them moving forward … our new executive producer, Matt Katz! Scroll down to the segment for some of his takes on what makes Philly amazing ⬇️

What's CITY Talking About?
📊 Fatal Overdoses Are Decreasing, But Not for Everyone
Last year, 1,122 Philadelphians died of an unintentional drug overdose — 7.5% less than in 2022. It’s the first decrease in overdose deaths in five years, but racial disparities are growing. Overdose deaths have been rising among Black and Hispanic residents, while they’ve been declining among white residents. [Inquirer 🔒]
🧑⚕️ Penn Medicine Residents Accept Union Contract
They’re set to become the first medical residents in the state with a union contract. Their deal with Penn includes a 25% salary bump, increased parental leave, and rides home after late shifts. [WHYY]
🪿 A Win for Wawa
Wawa has been ranked the country’s top convenience store chain, according to a new study from the American Customer Satisfaction Index. Taking metrics like coffee freshness, wait times, and food quality into account, customers gave it an 82 out of 100 overall. [CNBC]

📫 One thing I didn’t mention in yesterday’s segment about voting by mail: Apparently, some Pennsylvanians have been receiving mail ballots with the return envelopes already sealed. (State officials say it’s happening because of the humidity outside.) If this has happened to you, you can stop by a satellite election office or fill out an online form to get new materials.
Enjoy your Thursday!
