🚲 City Council Wants Cars Out of the Bike Lanes
October 28, 2024 · — Ava Wojnowski
It’s always sunny in Philadelphia: The Birds are 5-2 (thanks to Jalen Hurts' four TDs), the Sixers finally got a win (thanks to Tyrese Maxey's 45 points), and it hasn’t rained in a full month (thanks to the longest rainless streak in Philly in 150 years!).
On today's podcast, we talk about the unexpected benefits that Philadelphians can get from EBT cards and the SNAP program. Besides groceries, there's movie tickets, funding for education, and discounts all over town. Listen here:

What's CITY Talking About?
🗳️ Philly Campaign Countdown
- The constant campaigning continues, and Pennsylvania is still number one. According to this tally from The New York Times, Pennsylvania has seen more campaign visits from Donald Trump and Kamala Harris than any other state. [🔒 New York Times]
- The Inky's Julia Terruso trailed Kamala Harris yesterday through Philly, with stops at a church in and a barber shop. [🔒 The Inquirer]
- The potential next second lady, Gwen Walz, wife of Democratic VP nominee Tim Walz, grabbed a late-night bite at Jim’s South St. Clearly she took advice from our very own Trenae Nuri, who ranked Jim’s one of her top three Philly cheesesteaks — listen here to see what other spots are on her list. 👋 See Ya SEPTA CEO
Leslie Richards, the SEPTA general manager and CEO for the past five years, will step down on Nov. 29. She plans to become a professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Weitzman School of Design. SEPTA is launching a nationwide search for a replacement.
🚲 A Win for Philly Bikers
City lawmakers unanimously passed a bill banning motor vehicles from stopping in the city’s bike lanes. Although it was already illegal to park in the bike lanes, if Mayor Cherelle Parker signs the bill, cars wouldn’t be allowed to pull over and stop in a bike lane for any length of time.

Chef’s Choice: The Best Tasting Menus in Philly

As I’ve explored Philly’s food offerings, some of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten weren’t chosen off a menu. Instead I put all of my faith in chefs to curate meals with tasting menus. A chef's tasting menu is a multi-course offering set by the restaurant at a fixed price. So for those who enjoy a food adventure and always find themselves wanting to order everything, a tasting menu is the way to go. Don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered!
Don't Break the Bank (<$100)
Her Place Supper Club
This restaurant run by chef Amanda Shulman aspires to be more like a dinner party. Shulman hosts 24 people twice a night and makes a point of explaining the menu to all of her guests. Be prepared to eat whatever French and Italian-inspired dishes (sometimes with a Jewish spin) that the chef comes up with – she promises a new menu biweekly but reserves the right to change it daily or even by hour.
⏰ Monday - Friday, two seatings, one at 6 p.m. and the other at 8:30 p.m.
💵 $95 per person
📍 Rittenhouse Square
Kampar
This restaurant may have just opened this year, but James Beard-nominated chef Ange Branca is no stranger to Philadelphia. Her experience shows in her new restaurant concept – a classic Malaysian menu is available on the top floor and a tasting menu from a rotating group of local chefs from underrepresented groups is offered on the lower level. Chef Reuby is currently cooking up the entire dinner offering in an open wood fire.
⏰ Wednesday through Saturday, 7 p.m.
💵 $90 per person
📍Bella Vista
Worth the Splurge (>$100)
Honeysuckle Provisions
The “Untitled” menu at this West Philly Afrocentric grocery store and cafe tells a story with its tasting menu. With a focus on locally sourced food, Omar Tate and Cybille St. Aude-Tate represent the nuances of Black culture using culinary techniques spanning the African diaspora. For a little extra, beverage pairings are available.
⏰ Wednesday through Saturday, 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
💵 $110 per person
📍Cedar Park
Ambra
A table literally located in the restaurant’s kitchen affords you an exclusive front-row seat to the talented team behind this Italian restaurant. Serving up to four guests per night, the price tag is high but includes a multi-course dinner and wine pairing that changes seasonally, all while Chef Chris D’Ambro talks you through the meal. Keep in mind, this restaurant is cash only!
⏰ Wednesday through Saturday, one seating at 6:15 p.m.
💵 $300 per person
📍 Queen Village
