📹 Our favorite moments (so far) from The Portal
October 29, 2024
It’s always sunny in Philadelphia: The Birds are 5-2 (thanks to Jalen Hurts' four TDs), the Sixers finally have a win (thanks to Tyrese Maxey's 45 points), and it hasn’t rained in a full month (thanks to the longest rainless streak in Philly in 125 years!).
We’re also just one week away from Election Day. In a polarizing political climate, how do you know if the news you’re consuming is accurate and reliable? City Cast Philly host Trenae Nuri talked with Andrea Wenzel from Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication about the ways we can spot the difference between real news, fake news, and a kind of disinformation called “pink slime.”

What's CITY Talking About?
🗳️ Philly Campaign Countdown
- The Inquirer trailed Kamala Harris through North and West Philly on Sunday, with stops at a church and a barber shop. [🔒Inquirer]
- District Attorney Larry Krasner is suing Elon Musk to block his $1 million daily election giveaway in Pennsylvania. Krasner argues that this initiative constitutes an illegal lottery, as all lotteries in the state must be properly regulated by the government. Musk’s PAC has already given away over $9 million and about half has gone to Pennsylvania voters. [USA Today]
- The stars continue to descend on Philly, as John Legend joined Bruce Springsteen and former President Barack Obama for a concert/rally at the Liacouras Center on Temple University’s campus yesterday. [🔒Inquirer]
🪧 Transit Strike Looms
A unanimous vote by SEPTA workers could mean a strike unless a settlement is reached by the end of the day on Nov. 7. Since the murder of bus driver Bernard Gribben in 2023, SEPTA workers have been looking for better safety protections, like bulletproof vests, bulletproof shields, and more law enforcement support. 🌳 $250 Million for Longwood Gardens
The Longwood Gardens is set to open Longwood/Reimagined on Nov. 22 after a $250 million renovation. This new 32,000-square-foot space is the centerpiece of the historic du Pont garden. Longwood is also getting a new fine-dining restaurant. [Longwood Gardens, WHYY]
