📱 Did you get this election spam text?

October 30, 2024 · — Ava Wojnowski

Good morning to Philadelphia, where apparently former President Barack Obama just played a round of golf with Eagles Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts, and owner Jeffrey Lurie. Let me know who you think won.

In other news you may have missed, the city recently opened its first reentry-focused Neighborhood Resource Center to help the estimated 25,000 people who are released from prison each year. City Cast Philly host Trenae Nuri talks with Pamela Superville, deputy director of the city’s Office of Reentry Partnerships, and Desmond McKinson, manager of these new Neighborhood Resource Centers, about the challenges and resources for those leaving incarceration.

🗳️ Philly Campaign Countdown

  • Will the spam texts ever end? Thousands of people in Pennsylvania received text messages this past weekend saying that they already voted in the Nov. 5 election, even though they’ve yet to vote. These texts from “AllVote” are fake news and should be ignored, according to officials. [🔒Inquirer]
  • The gender gap is a major factor in the Nov. 5 election in Pennsylvania. Donald Trump leads men by 13 points; Kamala Harris is up among women by 18 points. This gap is consistent across swing states. [🔒Inquirer]

⚖️ Judge: Cops Who Posted Racist Rants Can’t Return to Force

A federal judge ruled that the Philadelphia Police Department was within its rights to fire or discipline 20 police officers for racist and offensive posts -- like one post of a skeleton holding a gun with the words “Death to Islam” on top. The judge said the posts could interfere with police operations, so they do not constitute protected speech. [NBC10]

📺 The Great Philly TV Crossover

Our two favorite shows, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Abbott Elementary,” are working on not one but TWO crossover episodes. The characters from “It’s Always Sunny” will go to school at Abbott Elementary in the ninth episode this season; the cast of “Abbott” will appear on “It’s Always Sunny” next season. [FOX29]
